A father-son trip through Nicaragua — with a twist ending. 🌋

Darren and his son came all the way from England for a full day of it — and we swapped the volcano into the evening, just to give them something most guests never see.

205 years ago today, five nations stopped belonging to Spain.

One signature. No war, no army. In a room in Guatemala, a handful of men signed the Act of Independence — and Nicaragua, alongside Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Costa Rica, woke up free.

But freedom didn't arrive all at once back then. There was no way to tell an entire country the same day. Just that signed paper, and a rider on horseback carrying the news from town to town, for days. People didn't wake up free — they found out, one town at a time, when someone finally rode in to tell them.

Yesterday we told you about the day this was defended with a rock in an empty hand. Today is the day it was decided in the first place — and 205 years later, we're still standing under that same flag because of it.

That's what legacy actually means. Not a word on a wall. What one generation signs its name to, so the next one inherits it already free.

Do you really know what Nicaraguans celebrate today?

Not a parade. Not a date memorized in school. This:

In 1856, a foreign army came to take Nicaragua and never give it back. They already had a president installed — their own man, not ours. They were erasing the country piece by piece: the language, the laws, the freedom of the people who lived here.

And Nicaragua said no.

At a cattle ranch called San Jacinto, on September 14th, a 25-year-old farmer named Andrés Castro stood in that fight with nothing but a r***e and no more bullets left. He didn't run. He picked up a rock from the ground and threw it — and stopped the man coming to kill him.

That's it. That's the whole heart of this day. Not generals, not strategy. One campesino, empty-handed, refusing to let his country disappear.

Nicaragua won that day. And it's been telling this story with pride ever since — not because it was easy, but because it was ours. Won by our own people, on our own soil, with whatever was left in our hands.

That's what legacy means. Not a word on a wall — something an ordinary person decides to defend, so it's still here for the next generation to inherit. It's why we carry that word in our name. Every journey we host is us handing you a piece of that same story — the real one, the one that still brings tears to a Nicaraguan's eyes.

Chapter 3 — The Grand Finale: San Juan del Sur 🌊

The day to exhale. Jason & Liliana's last full day in Nicaragua, and the Pacific delivered — with Edgard there for every mile of it.

🥾 El Faro — the viewpoint most visitors never find — a rustic 1.5km hike through the vegetation, multiple photo stops along the way, and a payoff most people miss: 360° views where the Cristo's bay opens up to the north and the wilder southern coastline — El Remanso, Playa Hermosa, Peña Rota — stretches out to the south. Less pavement, less crowd, more Pacific
🌴 San Juan del Sur town — the iconic ship's wheel sign, street art, the laid-back surf-town energy

We picked up Jason & Liliana straight from the airport and skipped the hotel entirely. Felt the Nicaraguan hospitality, from minute one — first stop, Managua itself.

"We had about 18 hours between flights and this filled the gap perfectly."
