—A friend recommended Greg to me — she uses him for trips out to Lance’s, an epic left break in Astillero. Sure, you could probably find a beat-up boat to take you there for cheaper, but for $100, I thought it would be the perfect way to celebrate my birthday in style.
So me and three girlfriends embarked on an epic birthday surf adventure.
The boat takes you just outside the break, and then you paddle in from there. You can leave your valuables, sunscreen, snacks, and anything else you don’t want floating away safely on the boat, then paddle back whenever you need a break. There’s also an awning for shade, which was much appreciated between sessions.
Greg shared some surf tips, made us feel welcome, and even let us get first dibs on the waves when we first paddled out. We had an absolute blast.
One thing that also stood out to me was that Greg wears an inflatable vest while surfing — not only for his own safety, but for the safety of his guests as well. He mentioned he’s used it to help others before, and honestly, that made me feel really safe and looked after.
But the real reason I’m writing this review isn’t about the boat or even Greg — it’s about his captain.
On my very last wave of the day, my leash unfastened and my board disappeared completely. I swam back to the boat with the help of a friend’s board, fully convinced my birthday had just ended in disaster. But his captain immediately said, “No problem, I’ll find it.”
He borrowed my friend’s foamy and headed off to the rocky shore to investigate.
About thirty minutes later, he returned worn out but with my board in tow like some kind of birthday miracle. Not only did he find it, but it was completely untouched — not a single ding in sight.
I really appreciated the extra care and effort it took to track it down and bring it back safely. To me, that’s customer service at its finest, and one of the reasons I love Nica culture so much.
Needless to say, he was rewarded handsomely.
I’ll definitely be using Greg’s services again.
