This is how the VoiceMap city walk of ‘s-Hertogenbosch starts:

“Welcome to Den Bosch, the city of carnival, the Bossche Bol and the St. John’s Cathedral. It’s also the city where I was born and raised. My name is Arjan, nicknamed AJ for the English speakers. Together we’ll have a wonderful walk through small alleys, open market squares, beautiful museums and a gorgeous cathedral.

We begin in front of the central train station, at the bottom of the escalator, where you already have a view of the Golden Dragon. More on that later.”

I think I don’t have to adjust it now that the local authorities have decided to change the name of the (train) station into central (station).

If you weren’t told you wouldn’t notice.

When you walk through the Hinthamerstraat, most of the time you’re not able to see the tiling in the street, because it is so crowded with pedestrians.

But the local authorities decided to show the position of the former Lovensche or Leuvense Gate in the street ‘decoration’ as shown on the image.

The old city walls were connected to this gate and caused the corner behind this gate to be called the Butter market.

Go and have a look when you visit Den Bosch.

A part of the so called Binnendieze, the canals through and under the houses of Den Bosch.

During the city walk you will walk over the bridge which you see on the picture.
The building on the right contains The Oeteldonks Gemintemuseum

Surely worth a visit.

Don’t forget to look up, while scrolling the streets of Den Bosch. Be amazed by the the beautiful window decorations, facades and entrance gates.

On this image you see the former pharmacy.

The staff with a snake wrapped around it was the symbol of the god of medicine Asklèpios in Greek antiquity.
Doctors and pharmacies use this symbol to indicate their profession.

Snakes were the symbol of renewal and rejuvenation. She changed her skin every year. Snakes that lived near healing springs were sacred.

The frogs of Oeteldonk.
It is the symbol for the Oeteldonk carnival. Oetel means frog and Donk stands for swamp.

During the coming carnival days in Oeteldonk you will therefore see the frogs everywhere.

Eng:

This mural is located in the quiet garden named after Jheronimus Bosch.

Jheronimus Bosch was born around 1450 in Den Bosch under his actual name Jheronimus van Aken. Growing up in a family of four siblings, he learned the painting trade from his father who in turn learned it from his father and grandfather.

The family originally came from Aachen, hence the surname and via Nijmegen they came to live in Den Bosch, where they moved into a studio near the Vughterpoort. Jheronimus grew up in the house on the market, which his father bought in 1462 and which was called 'In Sint Thoenis'. Jheronimus himself was addressed as Joen.

That is another way to enter a silent garden and get information about the paintings.

NL:

On the left side of the image you see the Pensmarkt, which we can translate in the ‘tripe market’.

On this side used to be the Palace of the Duke of Brabant, which bore the name ‘de Swaen’. The graceful animal the Swan was the emblem of the Brabant Dukes.

The House with the number 22 on the Pensmarkt, which bears the name ‘the gilded plow’, served as a parish church during the Second World War because the St. Peter’s Church had become disused. Neither the name nor the number are visible.
It is a beautiful red yellow brick building and when this city walk was made it housed two shoe stores.

And that all with the city hall in your back.

While looking at the scales model of the city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, you listen to the info that tells you that it is a bronze model of circa 1550. It was made by the German Egbert Broerken for the Historic City Model Foundation. The scale model has a scale of 1:800 and depicts the old city gates very nicely.

And that all automatically on the right moment and the right spot. (In front of the Dutch Reformed Church, also known as the Grote Kerk or Protestant Church).
