Until then, there was no such thing. So we have been real explorers for almost 30 years! Swan Expeditions’ Tall Ships sail to unique destinations.

In the early ‘90’s the people who preceded Swan Expeditions were the first adventurers with the idea of travel with a classic Tall Ship to extraordinary destinations. What exactly makes a destination so special? If you can easily get to a place by car, then everyone can get there. That is not special and not the right place. If budget airliners go somewhere, you know for sure that you are in the w

rong place. The exclusivity of beautiful areas often lies in their inaccessibility for the masses. The remote islands, deep bays and fjords frequented by Swan Expeditions’ Tall Ships are often only accessible by ship. You are going to experience something really extraordinary. Traveling by sailing ship is an adventure in itself, apart from the unique destinations. You are immediately away from mass tourism. A few miles from shore your cellphone range is lost and you live in the present moment again. Sailing the Tall Ship together is very special and creates a wonderful bond with the other expedition members. With that team you will travel to the remote and undiscovered nature. The combination of the Swan fleet and the destinations that only we can visit makes Swan Expeditions a special travel agency.

Our experienced crew members take great joy in their work and love to teach our guests how to sail, while guiding us through the astonishing Arctic wilderness of Svalbard-Spitsbergen.

When we go on a shore-expedition, the Noorderlicht is usually anchored near where we will go ashore. The image of the magnificent Tall Ship at anchor in a beautiful bay is always a feast for the eyes.
We use the zodiac to go on shore. Sailing in the zodiac is an adventure in itself, it's a lot of fun when the zodiac moors against the ice or slides a bit on the snow plate or on the beach. With our zodiac we're able to reach the most stunning and remote spots!

Chapter 6 ~History of the Noorderlicht~

In 2003, there was a question about whether the ship could endure the freezing winter conditions in the thick ice of Spitsbergen. The ship underwent hull reinforcements to withstand ice pressure. Next to that accommodations for sled dogs were added and in February 2004, the Noorderlicht successfully stayed in the polar ice. In a Spitsbergen fjord, serving as a base for hotel guests and researchers during the polar winter for over 10 years...

🫎 Svalbard Reindeer

Did you know, the Svalbard Reindeer stands out in the Cervidae family as the only species where both males and females grow antlers. This characteristic adds a fascinating dimension to the study of sexual selection and the influence of male-male competition on antler evolution. Female reindeer have evolved antlers not only for social reasons but also as a means of safeguarding their food sources during the winter months. In contrast, male reindeer showcase antlers that are both larger and heavier than those of their female counterparts.

Welcome back at Noorderlichts History, chapter 5.

Last time we told you about entrepreneurs Gert and Ted. They discovered the rusty Noorderlicht back in 1992. They've always dreamed of creating unique expeditions to very remote areas around the North Pole.

Almost 30 years ago, in 1994, their dream came true. During spring, the first sailing season in Spitsbergen started! As a poinier in this extraordinary and remote area there is much to see and do. There wasn't a market yet for adventurers to Spitsbergen, but their expeditions where fully booked. The Spitsbergen Adventure was a fact!

In 1992 sailors and entrepreneurs Ted van Broeckhuizen and Gert Ritzema discovered the rusty Noorderlicht. They've always dreamed of making special voyages to very remote areas, including the cold regions around the North Pole.
