Yesterday Culin-Air Travel was a special guest at the stand of Big Green Egg at the Masters Expo in The RAI in Amsterdam to promote our coming Abruzzo Culinary Big Green Egg Heritage tour coming May 25-30, 2025.

As a present for people who are interested in this exclusive tour, we created with BBQ52 a very unique Zaffarano dell'Aquila essence, to make saffron risotto.

*** TUSCANY FOOD - Part 6 ****
The final part of my pictorial report of Tuscany (posts with high lights will follow in time) is also the first and main reason for visiting: food. I considered splitting the photo report on the culinary part of the trip into parts as well. After all, it was a huge horn of plenty what I got to taste this trip. So in the end I decided to present it as such, simply because the sheer volume of culinary photos also tells its own story.

So, does Tuscany have a distinctive enough culinary heritage to inspire Culin-Air Travel to put together distinctive tours to this impressive Italian region in the near future? Tuscany's culinary heritage is dominated by wine and olive oil. Not surprising when you consider that the fertile volcanic soil and sun-drenched climate have provided the ideal breeding ground for centuries. It also formed the foundation for money and power, not insignificant conditions for the development of a rich cultural heritage. And thus a culinary heritage too.

Italy's national grape, Sangiovese, is first mentioned in Tuscany around 1600. The name probably comes from Sanguis Jovis or Blood of Jupiter, a name given by the monks of Santacangelo di Romagna by chance when a visitor asked for the name of this grape, which until then they had simply called vino.

Sangiovese is cultivated mainly in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Marche and Umbria, not coincidentally the regions of Italy with the greatest culinary heritage. Nature there offers truffles and olive trees, and m uch more! Prosperity brought in pigs, cattle and poultry. And with it, great chefs to create great dishes.

More than enough reasons to explore Tuscany further!

*** TUSCANY RELIGION - Part 5 ****
In Italy it’s hard to avoid religion in general. The same can be said about Tuscany. Cities are dominated by religious architecture and ancient monastries. In Siena you can even find a chapel that was built to bless horses that will run the famous palio, a mediaeval race on the main square that is unchanged in traditions until today. Left overs from centuries of power and influence, seen in the light of today not always matching their initial miraculous beauty that reflect a slowly fading era.

What remains are the spacious buildings filled with dedicated art, sometimes still in religious use, but some have found other respectful purposes. Some are hosting unexpected guests, but every site still brings a relief in silence from the restless life outside the huge wooden doors. Stunning courtyards with their statues and beautifully landscaped gardens. Still a great attraction for those who want to escape the delusion of everyday life for a moment.

In that light, little has changed.

*** TUSCANY NUDES - Part 4 ****
All of Italy is proud of David. Those who don't know better see a poodle-naked, small-shaped man, hanging something casually over his shoulder. For those who do not know better and end up in Florence in the Piazza della Signoria, where a replica of David still flanks the Palazzo Vecchio, they are treated to an excess of dicks and breasts. Part of sometimes gruesome scenes. Lovingly shaped by Michelangelo, among others. On a public square. Or just around the corner. No one takes offence.

Art intrigues, no matter how you look at it.

Over his shoulder hangs the sling with which David moments later defeats the giant Goliath. A little further on, Perseus stands with Medusa's head in his hand, which he chopped off moments before. A man robbing the virgin Polyxena and knocking off the mother. A naked man with a club in his hands and a man looking up between his legs in horror... Each image tells a great story. But it gains real value only when you know the stories. Without that, a very beautiful naked man remains.

*** TUSCANY TOWNS - Part 3 ****
Once you arrive in that Tuscan village or historic town, new surprises await you. Picturesque alleys and grand squares. Doors that are the gateway to the history of many generations. Art, religious or otherwise, watching over the narrow streets, or simply adorning them.

Everything seems to breathe the credo ‘la dolce vita’. Of course, in a small village like San Quirico d'Orcia or San Miniato in a totally different way from cities like Florence, Siena or Pisa. Each reveals its own secrets if you really look around. The nice thing about having a camera in your hands is that it forces you to do so.

*** TUSCANY VIEWS - Part 2 ****
Of course, Tuscany is most know about the beautiful golden sun flooded views of it’s hills with a single line of cypresses marking the road to a hill top villa. So immediately after landing at Florence Airport, I rented a car and drove to Vale d’Orcia, home of the famous Brunello wines and the Chianti vineyards with villages like San Quirico d'Orcia and the historic medieval city Siena. After the travel conference in Pisa I was treated with more amazing Tuscan views in the lesser known Terre di Pisa.

Of course, every goal (village, monastery, thermal baths) was an amazing experience, but driving through Tuscany simply doubles your precious travel time. The entire drive from place to place along the winding roads over the volcanic hills, between vineyards and olive trees is a feast for the eyes. Most times I was lucky to enjoy a sunny day, but even with clouds, the rides remained spectacular, regularly inviting a photo stop. Or just sitting and enjoying the sheer beauty of the so fertile landscape. .com

*** TUSCANY TREASURES - Part 1 ****
It was my second time in Tuscany. Last time was about 15 years ago, on family vacation. This time I was invited to attend .com and . Since I thought Tuscany is overwhelmed by tourist and I'm exploring the more hidden gems with outstanding culinary heritage. So I accepted the invitation and explored Florence, Vale d'Orcia and Terre di Pisa. And I was pleasantly surprised.

Over 1.5 thousand pictures that I took support the discovery of the Tuscany without Tourists, even in high season month September. Although in this month Pisa and Florence isn't a miss because of mass tourism, just outside Piazza di Miracoli and the art of Florence there is so much more to discover! In the coming time I'll post a compact reflection on this little paradise on earth!

In this post I like to present you the Tuscany that I saw through my camera’s as we all know it. From Ponte Vecchio in Florence to -of course- the Leaning Tower in Pisa. From the naked David to countless cypresses on the Tuscan hills. Cathedrals and churches. Monasteries. Middle Ages and Reneaissance. Vineyards. Olive trees, olive trees and olive trees. Villa’s. Religion. And endless streams of fine foods like tartufo, pasta, formaggi, prosciutti e salsicce.

It’s a starter, for in the coming time, I also like to show you the other sides of Tuscany that I discovered during this exploration of an incredibly attractive part of Italy that I truly started to understand a little bit better.

- Voeg dan de hete koffie toe;

Enjoy!
