Our co-founder has been a fan of Yayoi Kusama for years, and her work has physically stopped him in place more than once, in more than one country. This week he shared an emotional tribute to the artist, written while training our guides here in Amsterdam ahead of her retrospective at the Stedelijk, running from September 12th, 2026 to January 17th, 2027.

Kusama passed away this August, at 97, just weeks before the museum was set to unveil seventy years of her work, and the training turned into something closer to a eulogy than a briefing.

We build our guides differently. Beyond art history and contemporary art knowledge, this training pulled in philosophy and semiotics, from Byung Chul Han's writing on beauty and reflection to a closer reading of the mirror itself as a symbol, so our guides can offer our guests a story, not just a timeline.

I went back to Iceland to check things in person: our office in Reykjavík, the guides we work with, and every new property and activity we’re adding for this year’s aurora season.

It’s the same principle that’s kept this island’s culture alive for a thousand years. Icelanders never built monuments to hold their history. They built sagas, carried by voice, retold by the person standing in front of you. Nothing here was ever meant to be filed away and trusted blind, it was meant to be checked, passed on, kept current.

So that’s what nine days did: new hotels and experiences scouted and approved, hours with the guides who’ll be leading your clients under the lights this winter, and a clearer read on what actually delivers versus what just photographs well.

The aurora doesn’t perform on schedule. But this year, it’s putting on a show worth chasing across four countries.

From Iceland’s Troll Peninsula, reachable only by super jeep, no shortcuts allowed, to Swedish Lapland, where the hotel shape, shifts with the seasons. From Tromsø, where Amundsen once trained for the Arctic (now a direct flight from Amsterdam, no dog sled required), to Saariselkä, where the choice is quiet spa luxury or a glass-ceilinged igloo.

The timing isn’t incidental: we’re near the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle, meaning stronger auroras than we’ve seen in over a decade.

Some things are worth planning a trip around. This is one of them. 🌌

Long before maps, the first sapiens gathered around a fire to share the things that only make sense together: a sky, a story, a single moment.

The sun disappeared in Iceland — one of the few places on Earth in the path of totality — fell quiet. We were there, shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people who had come from everywhere just to stand under the same darkness. For two minutes, no one spoke. When the light returned, Björk turned the waiting into a gathering — a whole country celebrating the fact of being there at once.
A land of volcanoes beneath glaciers, of sagas spoken aloud for centuries before they were ever written. Here, looking up at the sky has always been a way of belonging.

One of the things we love most about the Netherlands is how quietly it rewards curiosity. Here is one of our favorites, set in Haarlem, a graceful 15 minutes from Amsterdam.

The opened its doors in 1778, making it the oldest museum in the country. Inside, time softens. Conceived during the Enlightenment, it was never meant to dazzle, but to invite thinking: art beside science, fossils beside drawings, questions beside answers.

Meet Michelangelo’s Madonna of Bruges, an important icon whose meaning deepens with the journey she has taken.

Carved in Carrara marble around 1501 to 1504, it is the only sculpture by Michelangelo to have left Italy during his lifetime. Bruges welcomed her with merchant confidence and a cultural appetite that still defines the city.

Her story reflects Europe’s upheavals. Seized in the Napoleonic era and sent to France. Taken again during the Second World War, hidden in an Austrian salt mine, then brought home by the Monuments Men, inside the Church of Our Lady, in the heart of Bruges.
