Before and after a photo session, I usually spend a few minutes photographing Amsterdam for stock photography agencies.

These images generally fall into two categories: commercial and editorial.

• Commercial photography has strict requirements. Brands need to be removed from the image, and every recognizable person must sign a model release allowing the photograph to be used commercially. Because of this, if I see someone cycling across a bridge, I will probably enjoy the moment rather than photograph it for commercial use.

• Editorial photography is much more flexible. It allows real life to remain visible, including people, brands, and everyday moments. The photograph simply needs to document a real scene in a public space.

A few days ago, I shared a collection of commercial images. This set is different. These photographs were created with stock photography use in mind, and all people in them signed model releases.

I believe photographers should keep training their eye every day. Looking for light, composition, and moments never really stops.

And if those practice sessions can become part of your business as well, even better.

I photograph stock images almost every week. If you’re curious about that side of photography, let me know what you’d like me to explain next.

Extra minutes happen.

I like my routes to feel complete, and sometimes that means spending a few more minutes in a location or finishing a walk naturally instead of stopping in the middle of a great moment.

That said, I am very mindful of people’s schedules. Before every session, I ask whether you have plans afterward. Many of my clients visit the Anne Frank House after their session, so I often adjust the route to finish closer to the museum.

It’s also important to understand the difference between a few extra minutes and adding time to a session.

A few extra minutes happen naturally and are usually no more than 10 minutes. Extending a session means upgrading to the next collection, which typically adds 45 minutes and allows us to explore a different area of the city and create a more varied gallery. Any additional time is invoiced on the day of the session.

Most of the year, extending a session is possible. During high season, especially April and July, it becomes more difficult because I often have other sessions before or after yours. That’s one of the reasons I respect my starting and ending times very carefully.

There is one exception: I always arrive early.

If you arrive early too, we start early. But I won’t end the session earlier because of that. Your session will always finish at the original ending time, so you receive the full experience you booked.

I started talking about stock photography right after this clip, so that story will have to wait for the next video.

A friend came to Amsterdam and we went for a walk. This is Negen Straatjes and we are heading to the supermarket for some bread. Daily life here sometimes looks like this.

These stone pediments in the Rijksmuseum gardens once decorated the Regulierspoort, one of Amsterdam’s former city gates.

Look closely and you’ll spot several symbols, including a cog ship, a medieval cargo vessel that became associated with Amsterdam’s trading past. For centuries, ships like these carried goods across Europe and helped shape the city’s prosperity.

Do you remember seeing these symbols before?

A few months ago, I made a video at Muntplein about one stone at the Munt tower with the old Amsterdam seal, including the soldier, the dog, the cog ship, and Amsterdam’s famous three-cross emblem. Standing in the Rijksmuseum gardens, I was surprised to find the same cog ship again.

Once you start recognizing the symbols, you begin to see connections between places that at first seem completely unrelated.

I believe we have a few months before I finish sharing all the sessions from the last tulip season. This one was a beautiful one on a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of April.

Keukenhof is a location to explore with patience, to look for the best light and the less crowds, and it’s possible to photograph at every time in the day and no matter the day of the week. I believe the only important thing is patience, time, and trust.

“Working with Joanna was a dream! She was absolutely incredible. We absolutely love her work and she made us feel at ease during our session. She took us to the best spots and while the gardens were crowded, she managed to deliver flawless pictures that made it look like we had the place for ourselves. Joanna is truly an artist and we were so impressed with her. Highly recommended.”

“She was so patient and kind to our children and made the process as easy as possible. We will enjoy these memories for a long time.”

A few steps from the traffic, bicycles, and crowds around the Rijksmuseum, there is a place that feels surprisingly quiet.

I spent some time walking through the Rijksmuseum gardens, looking at fragments of Dutch history that many visitors pass without noticing. Old city gates from Groningen and Deventer, sculptures inspired by mythology and the Bible, and even one small detail that reminded me how closely Amsterdam’s identity has always been connected to trade.

One of the original decorative stone pediments from a former city gate shows a cog, a medieval cargo ship that became part of Amsterdam’s emblem. We saw this also at Muntplein in another video (I’m linking the reel to this one).

What I enjoy most about these gardens is that they slow you down. The museum tells stories through paintings. The gardens tell stories through stone, iron, and architecture.

And somehow, despite being surrounded by traffic on all sides, they remain one of the quietest places in the city.

People often ask me how I manage to create content consistently as a vacation photographer.

The truth is, it’s not easy.

For a long time, my content depended almost entirely on whether clients allowed me to share their photographs. While many do, many prefer to keep their images private, which I completely understand. At some point, I realized I needed a different system.

That’s how the Diary of a Vacation Photographer in Amsterdam started.

I made myself a simple promise: record a short video before or after every photo session.

It doesn’t need to be planned or perfect. It just needs to exist. The subject is usually something connected to the session I’ve just had: a question a client asked, something I learned, a challenge I faced, or simply a detail that caught my attention.

What surprised me is that the diary solved several problems at once.

It helped me create content consistently. It helped me reflect on my work and document things I would otherwise forget. And it gave me material from every single session, whether I could share the photographs or not.

I’ve never been very good at keeping a written journal. But talking to a camera for a minute or two? That feels natural, even though I’m an introverted person.

And when something feels natural, it’s much easier to stay consistent with it.
