The legend of Amsterdam

In 1095 Charles the great was done with count Egbert so he fired him and appointed bishop Coenraad as the new count of the Frisian territories. Count Coenraad was not that happy about it. Because he knew the Frisian people were a rugged people. So he decided to visit his new assigned territories to see his new Duties. In disguise he sailed to Stavoren but before he could reach the mainland the weather called a halt to his arrival. After struggling to keep the boat a float Coenraad was on the brink of meeting his maker. The on looking Frisian people how saw it happened didn’t lift a finger to help as they figure out who he was and were not waiting for a change in power. But one Frisian lad was ashamed of his fellow people and decide to help the almost sinking Coenraad. With his dog and an oar he swam to the boat to get it under control again. He asked the lad to sail to Muiden. As the weather was not clear they ended up at the opening of the river Amstel and the dog wanted to leave so the two mean had time to talk. They introduced themselves and the lad decided to stay there as he did not want to stay with people who would let a man drown. Coenraad offer him a job but the lad “Wolfger” declined. As he liked the place where they were he decided to stay and become a fisherman with his dog by his side. Before Coenraad left he told Wolfger, here will arise a city that will become world famous. As the legend tells us this is what majestic Amsterdam has become.

The VOC ship.
Amsterdam has a old 18th century cargo ship. Here you can get a sense of how live would be like being a sailor man. Don’t forget; this was a ship that sailed to Indonesia, and her trip only took 8 months to get to the Far East. This ship is replica that started to be built in 1985 with help of 400 volunteers.

Magic moms in Amsterdam
How do they do it in Amsterdam? 1 bike 4 souls. Mother in the Niederlande are superwoman. They are able to cycle through the busy streets with three kids and even groceries. When you walk through the city you will be amazed how these ladies sail through the city on their bikes with all the extra passengers and cargo. And be aware NO helmets.
