Dankzij een MRI-scan werd in 2005 bij beeldend kunstenaar Barbara Glastra van Loon een levensbedreigende hersentumor ontdekt. Thanks to an MRI-scan in 2005, a life-threatening tumour was diagnosed in Visual artist Barbara Glastra van Loon's brain. Het was een ingrijpende en verbijsterende ervaring die haar inspireerde tot het maken van de auto
biografische voorstelling Over cirkels mijn ziel en A-Coustic. Fortunately the tumour was removed just in time, but this was a very intensive and traumatic experience, which has inspired her to create an auto-biographical performance called 'About Circles my Soul and A-Coustic'
Van Loon vroeg zes componisten uit verschillende muzikale disciplines om een stuk te schrijven gebaseerd op de magnetische geluiden van de MRI. Barbara van Loon asked six composers from various musical disiplines to write a piece of music based around the magnetic noise of an MRI-scan. Deze composities worden live uitgevoerd binnen een installatie met geluiddempende torens en lichtgevende kokers. Barbara Glastra van Loon neemt de toeschouwer mee in een bijzondere en aangrijpende ervaring. These compositions will be performed live, inside an installation, consisting of sound muffling towers and light-emitting diode tubes. Barbara takes the spectators through an exceptional and sophisticated event. Barbara Glastra van Loon: ‘’Een MRI-scan is als een tunnel die de meest bizarre, door magnetische golven voortgebrachte geluiden op je afvuurt, terwijl je klem ligt in een soort Hannibal Lector-masker, gefixeerd door schuimrubber keggen. According to Barbara Glastra van Loon: "An MRI-scan is like a tunnel, where your head is bombarded with the most bizarre noises, created by magnetic waves, while you lie trapped in a tunnel, wearing a Hannibal Lector style mask which is fixed with foam rubber wedges"
Het zijn bijzondere geluiden die je in die benauwde, steriele en volledig van de buitenwereld afgesloten koker waarneemt. In het dagelijks leven kom je deze niet tegen. The noises you hear in this claustrophobic and sterile environment, which is completely shut off from the outside world, are quite extraordinary and are not something people come across in normal daily life. Als je goed luistert hoor je niet alleen de extreme dynamiek maar ook wisselende ritmes, variatie in toonhoogten en een mix aan klankkleuren. If you listen carefully you will not only hear the extreme dynamics, but also changes in rhythms, variations in tone and a mixture of different timbres. Liggend in de scan bedacht ik mij dat deze geluiden ooit deel van mijn werk zouden zijn. Het werd tenslotte 'Over cirkels'.”
