“What have I learned from Amsterdam?”

Warren didn’t say bikes.
He didn’t say canals.
He didn’t even say stroopwafels.

He said: niksen.

Doing nothing.

Not scrolling.
Not answering emails.
Not optimizing your life.
Not turning relaxation into another task on your to-do list.

Just sitting.

Watching the water.
Watching the boats go by.
Feeling the sun on your face.

For a city that never seems to stop moving, Amsterdam is surprisingly good at slowing down.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons people love living here.

A reminder from Warren: sometimes doing nothing is actually doing something very important.

How good are you at niksen?

Americans often ask us what the biggest difference is between Dutch cities and American cities.

Honestly?

Space.

Or more accurately: the lack of it.

The Netherlands is a tiny country with a lot of people squeezed into it, so we’ve become masters of making every square meter work a little harder.

Our houses are smaller.
Our kitchens are smaller.
Our fridges are smaller.
Even our staircases seem to have been designed by someone who thought, “Good enough.”

In the 17th century, people built up instead of out. That’s why so many Amsterdam houses are tall, narrow, and look like they’re competing for the last bit of available sky.

And because we don’t have giant garages, giant pantries, or giant fridges, most Dutch people don’t do one massive grocery run every week. We simply pop into the supermarket every couple of days and buy what we need.

It’s practical.
It’s compact.
And somehow… it works.

Everyone arrives in Amsterdam with a list.

Anne Frank House.
Canal cruise.
Stroopwafels.
Maybe a questionable bike rental decision.

So we asked Ari:

“If someone visits Amsterdam, what are the three things they should do?”

His answer was surprisingly simple:

1. Take a walk through Amsterdam with Alexandra and the Who Is Amsterdam team (we couldn’t agree more).
2. Get on a boat. Amsterdam looks completely different from the water.
3. Spend some time in the Jordaan. Wander. Get lost. Find a café. Repeat.

And then his most important advice:

Enjoy yourself.

Seriously.

Not every trip needs to be optimized, maximized, researched, compared, ranked, and turned into a spreadsheet.

Sometimes the best Amsterdam memories happen when you simply slow down and let the city do its thing.

What’s the best advice a local has ever given you while travelling?

Most visitors come to Amsterdam looking for canals.

Locals?

We come here.

When the sun finally decides to show up, half the city seems to migrate to Marineterrein. Towels appear. People jump into the water. Someone opens a beer. Someone else forgets they were supposed to answer emails.

And somehow you’re still right in the middle of Amsterdam.

Clean swimming water.
Beautiful views.
A local brewery around the corner.
And that rare feeling of finding a place that still feels like a neighbourhood rather than an attraction.

Save this one for your next sunny day in Amsterdam.

📍 Marineterrein
20 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station on foot
About 10 minutes by public transport
Completely free

Bonus points if you grab a drink at Homeland Brewery afterwards.

Would you take the plunge?

Most tours teach you about a city.

We try to help you feel it.

At Who Is Amsterdam, we believe that people make the city.

That’s why our tours aren’t built around memorizing dates or rushing from landmark to landmark.

Instead, we use rich storytelling, humor, personal experiences, and genuine conversations to help you understand what Amsterdam is really about.

On some of our tours, you’ll even meet local Amsterdammers and hear their stories firsthand.

Because understanding a city isn’t just about knowing what happened here.

It’s about understanding what it feels like to live here.

And because Amsterdam is our home, we also believe in showing people how to visit responsibly.

How to navigate the city safely.
How to avoid the common tourist mistakes.
How to enjoy Amsterdam in a way that’s good for you, good for locals, and good for the city itself.

Our goal isn’t just that you leave knowing more.

It’s that you leave feeling connected.

❤️

Harry Styles is in Amsterdam.

Naturally, some people are reacting in a completely calm and reasonable way.

Others are trying to find his hotel, his breakfast spot, his favourite canal, his childhood dreams and probably his blood type.

Meanwhile, Amsterdam locals:

“Ah Harry?”

“Ja Harry.”

“Leave Harry alone.”

Dutch people have a special talent for treating global superstars exactly the same way they treat the guy fixing the bike shop around the corner.

No fuss.
No drama.
Just vibes.

come and join us🚀

We’ll show you Amsterdam.

And maybe teach you to “do normaal, dan doe je gek genoeg.”😉

P.S. We took Sign of the Times playing in this reel as a sign.

In the Netherlands, we have a word for one of our favorite activities:

Borrelen.

Which basically means:
meeting friends,
having drinks,
eating snacks,
talking for way too long,
and accidentally staying out until midnight on a Tuesday.

And honestly?
It’s less about alcohol…

And more about gezelligheid, connection, and slowing down a little.

You can borrel:
– at home
– on a terrace
– on a boat
– next to the canal
– standing outside a brown café
– basically anywhere the sun touches Amsterdam for more than 4 minutes.

And yes:
Bitterballen are involved.
Always.

If you want to borrel with locals and hear the stories behind the city, join us on the Humans of Amsterdam tour ❤️

Harry.

We need to talk.

You’ve been in Amsterdam for weeks now and we’re starting to think nobody has properly introduced you to the city yet.

And respectfully…

another canal cruise is not enough.

We’re talking about the actual Amsterdam.

The version with:
brown cafés older than most countries,
Dutch people who will tell you the truth whether you asked for it or not,
apple pie that could emotionally reset a person,
and bike traffic that functions almost entirely on faith.

So this is your official invitation.

No VIP treatment.
No awkward celebrity energy.
No “OMG IT’S HARRY STYLES” behavior.

Just two locals ready to take you undercover through Amsterdam like it’s a mildly chaotic secret mission.

We even brought sunglasses.

Which honestly already makes this operation extremely advanced by Dutch standards.

You’d meet real people.
Hear real stories.
Accidentally learn Dutch.
And yes — you would still have to play the True or False game.

Sorry.
City rules.

So Harry…

if you want to experience Amsterdam like a person instead of a headline—

come walk with us.

P.S. It’s a sign.

What makes Amsterdam different from other cities?

We asked Ari.
And his answer was very simple.

“Amsterdam is basically a big small village.”

People know each other here.
There’s community.
There’s this feeling that we’re all kind of sharing the same living room.

And look — not everything is perfect here.
Not even close.

The city can be chaotic.
People complain.
Bikes almost kill you daily.
The weather has emotional issues.

But somehow… people still try to keep it gezellig.

Warm. Open. Human.

And maybe that’s what makes Amsterdam feel different.

Not perfect.
Just people trying to create a good atmosphere together.

And honestly?
That feels pretty beautiful.

If you want to experience the city beyond the tourist version, come walk with us.

The moments that stay with Warren the most aren’t the loud ones.

It’s the moments where somebody quietly says:
“My son has epilepsy too.”
Or:
“My sister.”
“My partner.”
“My dad.”

And suddenly a walking tour in Amsterdam turns into something completely different for a minute.

There’s usually crying involved. Sometimes a lot of it.

But not in a bad way.

More in a:
“Okay… somebody understands this.”
kind of way.

And that’s the part Warren remembers most. Complete strangers connecting over something painful and deeply human in the middle of a city tour.

Sometimes while the guide continues walking with the group, people turn back to Warren and try to hand him money as a tip.

Which apparently also happens to him randomly on the streets of Amsterdam.

But as Warren says:
“It’s not about the money. I say no once. Then if they really insist… alright.”

“It’ll sponsor my next beer.” 🍻

If you also want to meet the humans behind Amsterdam instead of just looking at buildings… come join one of our Humans of Amsterdam walking tours ❤️ Link in bio👇
