🚲🌾 A day of dunes, water and wide-open horizons.

In the morning, we hop on our bikes and set out together. We ride through the dunes, past tall grasses, with the water coming into view again and again. The fresh coastal air is just as much a part of the experience as the little breaks we take along the way 🌊

While we explore the landscape by bike, our boat cruises ahead to the next destination. At the end of the day, we come back on board, sit down together and look back on the day’s adventures over a delicious meal ⛵

That’s what makes bike-and-boat travel so special to us: spending time outdoors, discovering new places and then returning to your familiar home on the water 💙

Volendam — Dutch tradition by the water. ⚓

Located on the shores of the Markermeer, Volendam is one of the Netherlands’ best-known former fishing villages. For centuries, fishing and life on the water shaped the town. Today, its historic harbor, traditional houses and fishing boats still offer a glimpse into that past.

Volendam is easy to explore by bike: ride along the waterfront, wind your way through its distinctive streets and soak up the atmosphere of this historic fishing village 🇳🇱

More than 100 years on the job, and still nowhere near retirement. ⚙️💧

Located in Lemmer, the Woudagemaal is the largest and most powerful steam-powered pumping station in the world. Despite opening in 1920, it's still fully operational today and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since large parts of Friesland lie at very low elevations, excess water must be drained regularly. When heavy rainfall causes water levels to rise too high, the Woudagemaal springs into action, pumping water into the IJsselmeer to prevent flooding.

The Woudagemaal represents the typically Dutch intersection of water, history and engineering. This structure reflects the Netherlands’ unique relationship with water and shows how innovation from more than a century ago can still play an important role today 🌊

Have you ever visited the IJsselmeer? ⛵🌊

Imagine feeling the wind fill the sails, helping the crew raise them and arriving in a new harbor before setting out by bicycle. Along the way, you pass historic waterfront towns, traditional Dutch villages and the peaceful, open landscapes surrounding the lake.

Sometimes, all it takes is a wide-open horizon to clear the mind. 🌾🌊

Along the coast of North Holland, historic harbor towns such as Hoorn and Enkhuizen give way to sweeping dunes, peaceful countryside and the island of Texel. One day, the IJsselmeer may be beside you; the next, the North Sea.

Gentle cycling routes offer a new view each day, while the famously wide Dutch sky stretches overhead. And after time outdoors, there is always the pleasure of returning to the ship for a comfortable evening on board.

Historic streets, green landscapes, a traditional Dutch windmill and the impressive Radboud Castle: Medemblik is a lovely stop to discover by bike.

On our Sail & Bike Wadden Sea tour, you cycle from Enkhuizen to Medemblik before the journey continues aboard the Simmer fan Fryslân. ⛵

And because this is an independent cycling tour, you can enjoy the route at your own pace, with plenty of time to take in the scenery along the way.

For a few weeks each year, usually from mid-August to early September, the Dutch heathlands burst into bloom, transforming the landscape into a sea of purple. It's one of the Netherlands' most beautiful seasonal spectacles and one that's gone almost as quickly as it arrives.

Heather thrives on sandy soils and has shaped the Dutch landscape for centuries. Today, these heathlands are protected nature areas, home to bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife that depend on this unique habitat. 🐝🦋🐦
