This piece of art was placed here in Amsterdam Zuid. It is meant to be a football player relieving himself next to the football pitch although the cold weather has lead to a rather interesting icicle formation. Here is the coat of arms of Amsterdam. Note the crown on top of the central coat. This is the crown of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The lions too represent the 13 provinces of the low lands of the the H. R. Empire. Prior to the creation of the Republic, Holland was a province of the Holy Roman Empire, and it was when the Spanish tried to take over from the Germans (and impose high taxes) that the Dutch fought for freedom during the 80 years war. Here is a wonderful old photograph from the middle of the 20th century of the kalkmarkt. This is on the east side of the city where the harbour and shipbuilding would have been during the medieval time period. After that left, this became the central market for lime or caustic soda. Winter is in full swing!

Nothing like Amsterdam in the winter with the fascinating Rijnbuurt here in the background. Originally Jewish neighbourhood, housing those emigrating from Germany in the 1920's & 30's.
