Did you know that this town just outside Amsterdam once played a crucial role in the city’s defence?

This is Muiden, located at the mouth of the Vecht River. For centuries, its strategic location made it important not only for protecting the river and controlling access to the surrounding waterways, but also for trade.

Although this page focuses on the municipality of Amsterdam, I’d like to share more stories about the towns and cities beyond Amsterdam that played an important role in protecting and shaping the region.

And Muiden is a particularly fascinating example. Its importance to Amsterdam’s eastern defences was such that the castle you can see in the distance, Muiderslot, was owned by the city of Amsterdam for centuries.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more photos and stories about the incredible castle seen in the distance and its history.

If you ever get the chance, definitely go and visit it, it’s definitely worth the trip!
