Do you know that a legendary wall by PHASE 2 has recently been restored and is visible again?!
Back in 1992, Jan Muller, founder of Galerie K.I.S. (now Vrij Paleis in Amsterdam), organised The Anti-Museum, a groundbreaking exhibition featuring pioneers of the New York City Urban Movement, including AMRL, COCO 144, FLINT 707, MICO, PHASE 2, PISTOL, SNAKE, and STITCH. This exhibition was all about honoring and clarifying the essence of underground graffiti culture. Among the works created in Amsterdam for the show, PHASE 2 was the only artist to paint an entire wall inside the gallery, a piece that shaped the identity of the space for years. But in an unfortunate turn of events, the wall was later painted over, erasing a crucial part of graffiti history.
The good news? The PHASE 2 wall is back, and it looks better than ever!

Among the American writers in Amsterdam there was PHASE 2, a visionairy artist from New York, known for his iconic bubble letters and intricate designs. This legendary New York writer, one of the pioneers of wildstyle, left his mark in the city, bridging the gap between Amsterdam’s emerging graffiti movement and the roots of hip-hop culture. Born Lonny Wood in the South Bronx, PHASE 2 (1955–2019) was one of the most influential graffiti writers of all time.

Do you know how it all started? In the 1980s, Amsterdam became a graffiti hotspot, heavily influenced by the rise of hip-hop culture in New York. Abandoned buildings, train yards, and metro lines transformed into blank canvases for both local and international writers. With the squatting movement thriving and a rebellious spirit in the air, graffiti became a powerful tool for self-expression and resistance. One of the biggest influences? The arrival of American writers, who introduced bold lettering, wildstyle, and advanced aerosol techniques, shaping the city’s graffiti movement and defining an era.

The heron is a symbol of patience, strength, and independence. Many artists incorporate this majestic bird into their work, capturing its grace and meaning. In Amsterdam, it’s easy to spot real herons, especially in Westerpark or around the city. One artist who beautifully celebrates the heron in her work is Belgian artist Adele Renault, known for her stunning, hyper-realistic murals that honor the beauty of everyday creatures. If you walk around Amsterdam, you might come across her breathtaking heron mural, which has been watching over the De Pijp neighborhood since 2018.

Flowers have long symbolised beauty, life, and transformation. In art, they speak of love, fragility, renewal, and even defiance. From classical still lifes to contemporary street art, they continue to inspire artists worldwide. Pictured here is a stunning piece by Spanish artist Irene López León. Known for her bold colors and modern perspectives, she masterfully blends figurative and abstract elements, reimagining classical themes in a fresh way. “Gold and Bread” (2024) – part of the STRAAT Museum collection – pays tribute to Rachel Ruysch, the 17th-century still-life master who defied conventions with her vibrant floral compositions. Through this piece, Irene honors her legacy, using the tulip as a timeless symbol of beauty and resilience.

If you’ve ever walked through Amsterdam, you’ve likely come across one of the city’s most joyful sights, bicycles covered in bright, colorful flowers. These are the works of Flowerbikeman, also known as Warren, who has dedicated his life to spreading positivity through his floral-covered bikes. Originally from Florida, Warren’s journey began as a way to help his wife, Michelle, navigate the city after struggling with epilepsy. He decorated her bike with sunflowers to guide her way, unknowingly starting a movement that would bring happiness to thousands. What started as a personal gesture grew into a symbol of resilience, love, and creative expression. Now living in Amsterdam, Warren has placed over 100 flower bikes around the city, transforming everyday spaces into bursts of color and joy. For him, these bikes are more than just art, they are a reminder that “Love is the cure.”Have you ever come across one of his flower bikes?

Tucked away in Amsterdam’s Centrale Markthallen, Keith Haring left behind one of his largest surviving public artworks in Europe, a giant sea creature mural! Painted in 1986 on the side of a former Stedelijk Museum art depot, this bold, playful work was hidden under protective panels for decades. Thanks to restoration efforts, it’s now visible again, bringing Haring’s vibrant energy back to the city! A true icon of street art and activism, Haring saw art as a way to connect with people beyond gallery walls. His work still speaks to us today.

When Keith Haring arrived at the Stedelijk Museum for his first European solo show in 1986, he didn’t just bring his artwork, he created a new one on the spot!

Amsterdam Notes is a 38-meter-long drawing that feels like a mural but was actually painted directly onto paper. Using high-quality sumi ink, traditionally used in Japanese calligraphy, Haring completed this dynamic piece in a single take, without sketches or a pre-planned meaning. His bold lines, dripping paint, and energetic brushstrokes flow freely across the surface, inviting endless interpretations.

Since becoming part of the museum’s permanent collection, Amsterdam Notes has only been displayed twice, once in 1992 and again in 2023, following an intricate restoration. Seeing it today is a rare opportunity to witness Haring’s raw creativity in motion, making it a true standout in the Stedelijk collection.
