Sails and Bicycle Tales: Mara and Moon

The past 8 weeks we’ve been traveling around Colombia. We’ve been finishing up the project Sail to the COP and have enjoyed the beautiful nature and cities of this country together with different companions of the Sail to the COP team. 🌱⛰

🪂we flew carbon free
⛰we hiked
🌊we rafted
🏄🏼‍♀️ we surfed
👩🏽‍🏫 we learned a bit of Spanish
🧘🏽‍♀️ we did yoga in a permaculture farm
🌱 we picked coffee and harvested bananas
🚡 we went by cable cars in different cities
🚌 and spent hours on busses
🌃 until we made our way back to Cartagena last week

Here, in Cartagena we’ll start the next chapter of our adventure. From now on, we won’t travel by bus anymore but we will step on boats and peddle our bikes. ⛵️🚲

And good news... Sarah Kunze will be joining us the next month! 😁🚴🏼‍♀️🚴🏻🚵🏼‍♀️

The Sail to the COP project has finished⛵️. One week ago we took our bikes off the ship onto land in Colombia. It was sad to say goodbye to our home and work space and our family of the past 80 days. But we are grateful for all the great experiences we've had on board of the Regina Maris with Sail to the COP. Even though this project is over, the year that lays ahead will certainly bring many new adventures! 🚵‍♀️We are currently in Colombia (instead of Chile as planned) so we have to adapt our plans a bit and they are still in the making. We brought the word flexibility to a whole new level during Sail to the COP so stay tuned!

Got our bikes on the ship, Regina Maris, today. ⛵️We are ready to cross the Atlantic with the crew of Sail to the COP, the adventure of Sails and Bicycle Tales has started! 🚴‍♀️🚵‍♀️

About three years after the crazy adventure to the Black Sea, another chapter for Mara and Moon will start wednesday! New adventures in the pipeline! Mara and Moon will be sailing to the UN Climate Conference (COP25) in Chile to address issues of unsustainability in the travel industry. Here's Mara telling why she's organising this project.

Two years ago we started our Adventure by Bike and cycled across Europe in two months. Although we've had many adventures since, they weren't as big bike adventures as the one two years ago. But now that were coming towards the end of our studies we dare to dream of further, longer and more adventurous bike trips...

Adventure by bike continues! We had a little weekend adventure in Annelottes province of birth: Zeeland. We visited her parents, sister and grandma and did everything by bike. That might not sound as such an adventure, but cycling on the Zeelandbrug (a 5 km long bridge) in a storm is quite a challenge. On the way towards Zierikzee we cycled with 44 km/h! The way back took a tiny bit longer... The picture s show the bridge, Moon playing in the wind and Mara using Annelotte as a wind shield.

One year ago we started our adventure by bike! And much has happened since. After the adventure all three of us started our masters. Moon and Mara started with courses in Wageningen and Annelotte moved to Köln to write a minor thesis. Besides studying we always found time for some adventures, like going skiing and snowboarding, traveling through Vietnam or northern Finland, sailing to England or field work abroad. This summer has been one big adventure as well. Although we didn't do any far cycling trips we spend our time well! Moon has been in Marocco with her sister and to Iceland for a course. Mara started her summer with a summer camp in Poland, then she sailed to England with her dad and now she's in Slovenia for a hiking adventure with Annelotte. Annelotte worked the first month of the summer on the beaches of Ameland as a lifeguard and then left for Slovenia. And, our next adventure will start in three days. So no cycling trips this year for us, but next week we will pick up a new style of traveling: the canoe! Together with five other girls from our rowing team we will paddle through Poland for a week. To celebrate the fact that we met exactly five years ago. Meanwhile we keep dreaming about cycling routes through Canada, around Iceland or across New Zealand...

While Annelotte is cuddling reindeer in Finnish Lapland and Mara is roadtripping Northern Vietnam, Moon holds down the fort for us. So we can all come back in a week and live together in the town where we met each other four and a half years ago. We haven't lived there at the same time for 20 months now!

Europafietsers is a Dutch foundation that aims at stimulating and inspiring people to make cycling trips throughout Europe. They mainly do this by providing routes or information on bike trails.
