Thanks to this fountain placed on top of the loggia of the Papal Palace, in the 13th century the Pope was the only person in town to have running water in his house. One of the most famous fountains in Rome is the Four Rivers Fountain in Piazza Navona. The fountain (not in this picture) represents – via four rivers – the four continents known at the time of its construction. We see the Danube, the Ganges, Rio della Plata and the Nile, veiled given the then lack of knowledge regarding its source.

Riomaggiore has the charm of villages wrested from the sea, with houses that slope down towards the water, clinging to a mountain dotted with rows of vines. Here begins the Via dell'Amore (Road of love) that goes as far as Manarola, only 1 km but a very charming pedestrian road along which splendid landscapes can be admired, amid the noise of the waves that break on the rocks and the brackish air.
