Are you a newcomer to Eindhoven, looking to find out more about your new home, meet new people and even learn some Dutch? Then maybe volunteering as a Navigator could help you achieve these aims. You will be part of a team of locals and internationals, together with whom you’ll explore the city centre. It’s good exercise too! You will walk together with a Dutch speaking partner and answer questions from visitors and residents (don’t worry, your partner will help you out). Interested in volunteering? Back in December 2019 when the Navigators first started, we were invited by the Queen restaurant and hotel to stop off for a drink and a sanitary stop whenever we wanted. We have made regular use of the hospitality .eindhoven and when we heard that they were celebrating their 30th anniversary we decided to pop round with a bunch of flowers. Owner Perry told us that the Queen has in fact been in existence for 35 years . Imagine the changes it has seen - the transformation of Eindhoven from Philips company town to technology and innovation hub, the process of digitisation , the introduction of the Euro plus of course the Covid epidemic and rising costs and labour shortages of recent years. Quite an achievement to stay relevant and attractive for such a long time! The second generation is now at the helm and we would like to wish the Queen all the best for the coming years and to thank them for all the cups of tea and coffee we have enjoyed there!

We love our bikes and so we are really pleased the Fietsstation is back on the 18 Septemberplein (outside the Mac). It will be there until 18.00 hours today and will be back again in two weeks time. One of the Navigators got bike lights complete with Eindhoven vibes, and you can even get your bike sprayed. Great initiative, thank you !

What’s are the Navigators doing this sunny weekend? We might be getting our bikes fixed because the Fietsstation is back on 18 Septemberplein. Organised , you can get your bike pimped and any minor repairs carried out for nothing. Good idea, and while your bike is being fixed you can listen to . There’s a free city festival - Bridge Around Town - with performances .eindhoven as well as and . On the TU/e campus is themed around Ancient Gods and Glory and is from 14.00-2.00 on Saturday. There’s the Q***r Art Club and the Biological Market is back on the Wilhelminaplein. On Sunday we will definitely be at Lichtstad Caribisch Oogstfeest . The parade starts at 12.00 on the Stadhuisplein and from 13.00-21.00 hours there are performances and the event celebrates Dutch - Caribbean heritage after the abolition of slavery. Finally - and not free, but sounds great - is organising a Tipsy Tea with a DJ to listen to while you enjoy your high tea. See you in the city!

On Thursdays we like to update you on new businesses in the city centre, so here goes! On the Markt work is underway on the new store. We are impressed by the entrepreneurial skills of owner Tess Verwoert who started a webshop in a shed aged only 16 and how had a 25 million euro turnover.This is her sixth store and as she normally attends the opening of her stores we will be looking out for her, and her outfit. In work is in progress on so chocoholics will not have to be patient for much longer. Fashionistas will be pleased to hear that will be re-opening on 4th June (next Thursday). It’s had a makeover so we will be interested to see the result. We have posted about Korean BBQ restaurant Go Gi - it’s on the corner of Kleine Berg and Keizersgracht . We have noticed that the interior is nearly ready … coming soon! Finally, on the Edenstraat .eindhoven is coming on the location of Asian Food Corner. Gloei will be serving all-day breakfasts - our favourite meal of the day!

The Navigators are getting summer ready! Our t-shirts were getting a bit faded and so our contact person is going to take care of new outfits for us. Navigators come in all shapes and sizes but we all have to look presentable! Would you like to know how navigating is organised? We start our shift at base camp on the Vestdijk with a drink and a biscuit. Then we get kitted up with the iconic red pointer in our backpacks and we set off to the This is Eindhoven store . After a briefing about what’s happening in Eindhoven we split up and walk round the city centre in pairs. We try to combine a local with an international Navigator and make sure newbies get the information they need to help visitors and residents. A shift takes three and a half hours but we get a break halfway - , and are all very hospitable to us. We use an app to communicate what we have done with the other Navigators. We walk at weekends but we would like to walk more, so if you are interested in joining us , mail [email protected] for more information. We are volunteers but there is a small hourly payment to cover bus fares, parking and shoe leather. See you in the city - and you can check out our new kit!
