Did you know there’s a secret garden almost in the city centre and today you can visit it? It’s in the Palingstraat and it’s maintained by volunteers. Every first Sunday of the month it’s open for visitors but today is special because it’s the 25th anniversary. The volunteers have had to fight to keep this beautiful natural environment open in an increasingly built up city centre. If you have the chance it’s a must! Open today and every first Sunday of the month from 12.00-16.00 hours.

Our shift today - and in the pic you see a navigator after a talk with a new business owner . This was rather an unusual conversation because it was conducted in Mandarin, but we’ll explain later🙂. We started off by checking in at the This is Eindhoven store for our briefing. Then by the roundabout Markt Eindhoven we were stopped by a group of lads. They belonged to a football club in Breda and were here for the weekend. They had to complete a number of assignments and one of them was to play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with a stranger. I chose scissors, he chose paper….continued on our way with a smug smile. Outside the PSV fanstore we met an English speaking group pushing an adult family member in a wheelchair. We asked if they needed directions but one of them said she lived in Eindhoven and knew her way around….”I told you they were friendly here” I heard her say as we moved on. Then on to Emma District Eindhoven where we noticed someone hard at work in what used to be Manju Streetfood. We popped in to ask what was happening and my colleague took over the conversation because it was obvious that Mandarin would be more effective (international navigators so useful). A noodle restaurant will be opening in this location very soon, it’s going to be called Qin Chuan which is a combination of two Chinese place names and is where these Chinese noodles originated. We’ll update you in our Thursday “Coming Soon” post. Looked in de Bibliotheek Regio Eindhoven at a genealogy workshop - the Bieb is so much more than books. On to De Bergen Eindhoven where we chatted to some German visitors and then met up with a guy outside Yatvavintage.com . He wanted to buy lots of pre-loved denim jackets to paint on so we mentioned All Vintage and ReShare Store as well. Worstenbroodje Bakkertje Bol and then on to Xenos Piazza Center to give them the info package Bureau Binnenstad Eindhoven . Questions about the Zara, where to eat , a good conversation with Sfeerbeheerder and more … a fairly quiet shift in pleasant temperatures today.

What are the Navigators doing this weekend? We might pop in de Bibliotheek Regio Eindhoven because a free genealogy cafe is being held to help you get started on tracing your ancestors. Opening today, the exhibition by Gummbah, artist Gert-Jan van Leeuwen, Liberta Totalamente, is on until 11 October Van Abbehuis in its temporary location Herinneringscentrum Hornemann . The van Abbehuis is being renovated. Kazerne the work of graduate students of the Design Academy is on show and Parktheater Eindhoven the tapestry designed Victor Sonna has returned to Eindhoven after a tour of the province. It’s called ‘Threads of Slavery’ and volunteers from all over Brabant worked on it. On Sunday 6/09 the official unveiling takes place in the presence of Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem . Also on Sunday you can visit a secret garden in Gestel. There’s an open day in Palingstraat in Gestel from 12.00-16.00 hours. On Sunday there’s Live Unplugged FIFTH | Find what's refined , free entrance. See you in the city!

You can chuck all those mobility apps off your phone and replace them with umobapp ! Yesterday we visited the photo booth on 18 Septemberplein and heard all about the new app for bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes and scooters in Eindhoven. Dott, Felyx and Cargaroo are all now included in the Umob app. Make your account and then you can get a day pass for €10- or you can cycle for half an hour for €1.50. So this how it goes : download the app, select from what is available, book and pay in the app and then off you go! The app shows you where you can park when you don’t need wheels anymore. We had fun in the Photo Booth and the app might come in handy …. worth checking out.

Take a walk! The Navigators have got a walking / cycling route that you can complete in under an hour (half an hour if you’re cycling) and that takes you past some of Eindhoven’s most interesting locations. See you in the city!

Have you noticed those guys in white jackets patrolling our city centre streets? They are the Sfeerbeheerders ( I suppose you could translate it into Mood Maintainers) and they help to keep the city centre a hospitable, welcoming place. They aren’t BOAs or police or security guards and their role is not enforcement - they de-escalate conflicts, mediate when someone’s behaviour gives cause for concern and intervene to stop problems developing. They use connection and persuasion rather than force ….. after all, moving a homeless person or beggar on doesn’t really solve a problem, it just displaces it, so Sfeerbeheerders try and connect troubled individuals with the appropriate services. We regard them as our colleagues on the city streets and exchange information with them when we meet up Bureau Binnenstad Eindhoven . They are nice people so if you notice anything concerning in the city tell us or tell them!

The Navigators don’t do naming and shaming but we were disappointed to see these signs in a couple of city centre eateries. Not very hospitable, is it? Being able to use the toilet is a basic human need and if the facilities aren’t available some people won’t visit the city centre and others will go home earlier. Fortunately a lot of retailers realise this : Boekhandel Van Piere Dille & Kamille Sissy-Boy De Bijenkorf HEMA Eindhoven Centrum (for €0.50 cents) all offer toilet facilities. ‘Where is the nearest toilet ‘ does happen to be a FAQ for the Navigators ……

Didn’t Eindhoven shine this weekend! and .festival combined to showcase so much talent. It was not just about enjoying theatre, music and poetry but participation and inspiration…. and we were impressed by the diversity of the talent on show this weekend. The cultural season is well and truly open!

Re-opening today! The Navigators have always loved and we always take new navigators there to show it to them. This monumental building dates back to 1879. It became the property of Thomas van Dijck, a prominent local timber factory owner, and then the Eindhovens Mannenkoor . Then it was passed on to the Van Gorp family who made the building into a furniture shop. In WW2 it suffered bomb damage and fell on hard times, probably reaching its lowest point as Mixor Chicken fast food outlet. Then in 1995 local entrepreneur Paul van Boxtel acquired this gem and set about restoring it to its former glory . The interior had a makeover which restored the beautiful mouldings and the large, light dome. The Baroque look was enhanced by amazing murals created by (we were so pleased to see they are still in situ). Now after the first renovations Thomas has been upgraded for a second time. The objective is to create an all day and evening hospitality venue which will appeal to different age groups. We had a sneak preview today and we thought Thomas looked amazing…. It’s open now and definitely worth a visit!
