And then came the siege of Vienna....1683

The Ottoman Empire: Expansion and Dominance (1300-1683)

The Ottoman Empire emerged in the early 14th century under Osman I, expanding rapidly across Anatolia and the Balkans. By 1453, Mehmed II ("The Conqueror") captured Constantinople, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire and transforming the city into the empire’s capital, Istanbul.

Under Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566), the empire reached its zenith, controlling vast territories in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Ottomans established a highly organized administration, a formidable military with the Janissaries, and a legal system blending Islamic and customary laws.

Their navy dominated the Mediterranean, while their land campaigns reached Hungary, Iraq, and Yemen. However, the 1683 siege of Vienna marked the empire's halt in European expansion. Although still powerful, the Ottomans shifted from an era of conquests to internal struggles and defensive wars.
