Every year in early December, the Netherlands transforms into a land of jingling bells, chocolate letters, and mysterious footsteps on rooftops—because Sinterklaas is in town. This bearded gentleman, dressed in a red bishop’s robe and arriving by steamboat from Spain (don’t ask too many questions about the geography), is the star of one of the Netherlands’ most beloved traditions. Usually, he is not actually riding a bike, but rather his white horse, but hey, this is the Netherlands ad he is quite flexible for his age!
Sinterklaas Eve, or pakjesavond, falls on December 5th, when families exchange gifts—often wrapped in hilariously over-engineered packaging—and read “surprises,” playful poems poking gentle fun at the recipient. Children leave shoes by the fireplace (or just a heating vent, modern life being what it is), hoping Sinterklaas and his helpers will drop in a treat or two.
It’s a celebration full of warmth, wit, and plenty of sweet snacks, from marzipan to pepernoten. Think of it as the Netherlands’ own wonderfully quirky prelude to the holiday season—equal parts festive, funny, and completely charming.

The Netherlands' Amersfoort named European City of the Year!

Amersfoort was assessed, among other things, on its urban development qualities, but also on sustainability and how the city is managed. The Netherlands' Amersfoort has been named European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism in London. The jury praises Amersfoort for its quality of life, progressive urban planning and innovation while preserving the city's character and heritage.

'European City of the Year' is an international professional award that is awarded based on the layout of a city, the variation in housing types and the connections between neighbourhoods. The Academy is made up of scientists, politicians and specialists from all over the world in the field of urban and regional development.

In September, a delegation from the Academy visited the city. Amersfoort was assessed, among other things, on its urban development qualities, but also on sustainability and how the city is managed. According to the jury, Amersfoort receives the prize because the city focuses on the well-being of residents by, among other things, limiting car use and offering a diverse range of affordable and good-quality housing.

Amersfoort was assessed, among other things, on its urban development qualities, but also on sustainability and how the city is managed.

Add a touch of Dutch to your street! Through Google Streetview, AI and the knowledge of Dutch cycling experts, anyone in the world can see what their street looks like if it is designed to be bicycle-friendly, green and safe.

This tool is developed for people to get inspired. With playful research AI regenerates street view and aims to show what streets could also look like. Of course AI and the technique, i.e. using Google Streetview images has its limits and is improving moving forward. Feedback and interaction are wel...

We're often asked if people have to share the roads with cars while cycling with Holland Bike Tours in the Netherlands. Firstly, there are many-many designated bike paths and lanes. However, secondly, there is also an invisible infrastructure network in almost all cities here. This means that you barely share the roads with cars, even if it seems like the street does not have a separate bike path. You can learn about this infrastructure by watching this informative video of Not Just Bikes Enjoy!

It's Autumn! Are we going to ride our bikes, or not?
We vote YES! Okay to be fair, it is not for everyone as it is getting colder, there is more chance of rain and the chances of wind is increasing. But if you prepare in the right way, and you can take a punch, this is a great cycling season!

The most beautiful reason is the colors. Orange, brown, yellow, green, red, purple, you will encounter them all and more, in many different versions along the way.
Another nice advantage? Your health. Because of the wind, it will bring just that little bit more of a challenge and it is therefore also better for your condition. Certainly because the Netherlands has no mountains, for the real blood pumping feeling, the wind is it!

You can check out our All Seasons Tour, for comfortable cycling in Autumn.
