Ruins of a former unloading dock with railway tracks next to them are still visible in front of the old guardhouse and entrance of former Dachau concentration camp. Though the unloading docks were used for goods and not for people, the image is a poignant reminder of what happened in several other camps built to the standards invented and perfected at Dachau.
Visited today on The National WWII Museum tour.

While his grave mentions 1 Jan 1945 as the date he died, veterans of , 506th PIR have always maintained that John Julian actually was killed during the patrol in the Bois Jacques of 21 Dec 1944. We visited his grave today on The National WWII Museum Easy Company Tour to talk about his service with E/506 and honour John, placing our wreath at his grave.

Between 20 Dec 1944 and 4 Jan 1945 - with the exception of a few days during the ‘1,000 yard advance’ after New Year’s - Easy Company, 506th PIR manned the frontline in the Bois Jacques in front of Foy. In bitter cold and with poor or no winter clothing the men endured shelling and a counterattack. A good two-week period in their war experience that would have a profound impact on the veterans that lived through the Battle of the Bulge. Today, it is a poignant and important stop on the The National WWII Museum Tours as it also was today.

One of the original members of , James Diel became the new company 1Sgt after 1Sgt Evans was killed on the jump. Because of his outstanding service, James was promoted to 2Lt and subsequently transferred to A/506. He jumped with this unit on 17 Sept 1944 north of Eindhoven during op and was killed in action two days later during German counterattack at Son bridge. Today we honoured James by laying a wreath at his grave on our The National WWII Museum tour.

‘A simple farm boy, passionate and at times impulsive.’ That is how family members described Joe E. Mann from Reardon, WA. Joe served as a Pfc in H/502, during . On 19 Sept 1944 during Op , whilst wounded four times and both arms in slings, Joe jumped on a German gr***de and sacrificed himself to safe his fellow soldiers. Joe died, his friends lived. Joe received the for his action. A memorial near the spot where it all happens reminds us of hos sacrifice, which we visit today on a The National WWII Museum tour.

A wonderful start of the Autumn season as to guiding The National WWII Museum Tour on the Netherlands to Berchtesgaden stretch. Today, we covered Easy’s experience in The Netherlands during operation and beyond. One of the places we visited was the Koevering/Logtenburg area where three British tank crew, fighting alongside E/506, got killed on 25 Sept 1944, a small private memorial commemorating that event today.

All tours are special, especially when following the footsteps of a veteran with family. But some are more than special. Last week was one of those as I guided the family of Lieutenant ‘Rivers’ LaRiviere, who was one of the platoon leaders in the first wave of the Waal Crossing on 20 Sept 1944 whilst serving in H Coy, 504th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. Truly an honour!

A wonderful tour today with two brothers from NL. Both have had an interest in ww2 history and Arnhem in particular, one of them decided to give a battlefield tour to his brother for his birthday. Today, we took both brothers around, sharing the story of the Battle of Arnhem with them. They enjoyed the tour very much and already decided to look into booking another tour in future.

A small churchyard in the West Country. A CWGC headstone with 12 Oct 1940 as a date and a distinct epitaph, referring to the Battle of Britain. Who was F/O Case and why was he buried here, so far from where the Battle of Britain was fought? A small memorial in the church gave answers.

Herbert Robert Case was born in this tiny village, practically next to the church, and grew up in this farmer community. Commissioned in August 1940, he flew with 72 Sqn at Biggin Hill. He was finally killed as his Spitfire crashed near Capel-le-Ferne in Kent. His best mate was killed a week later.

So here he lies, Herbert Robert Case, a hero of the Battle of Britain, in the churchyard next to his family, next to the place where he was born and grew up. And with the words of Sir Winston Churchill as a fitting epitaph!

In a quiet - almost desolate - rural village in Gloucestershire, this war memorial can be found, commemorating the men of this village who died during the Great War. What is so remarkable and unique about this memorial, is that the crucifix itself is a battlefield relic. It was found shot and broken in 1917 at Beugny on the Somme, just east of Bapaume and brought back to Gloucestershire. The inscription tells us that “the men and women of Nympsfield have set it up to remind them of God’s mercies during the Great War & to beg his blessings on the living and the dead. ‘He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our inequities.’ Isaias LIII:5” A beautiful and solemn memorial.
