Balkan Boulevard 2026 - FINISH

Last days through Greek's impressive mainland and Peloponnese including Olympia (the cradle of the Olympic Games), the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the stunning Rio–Antirrio Bridge, the Cortinh Canal, dozens of little chapels and a lot of wonderful scenery.

And after 3.600 km, the finish in Athens. A city of 5.000 years old, home to Socrates, Plato, and the birthplace of Western democracy. Something that a lot of politicians seems to forget these days.

All riders, very well done. Chapeau.

We hope to welcome once again somewhere, somehow.

Balkan Boulevard 2026
Great cycling conditions along the coastline in the south of Albania and the mountains in the north of Greece.
Everywhere wonderful scenery, especially at Meteora; a UNESCO World Heritage site and translated as "suspended in the air." Immense sandstone pillars rise dramatically from the plains.
In the 14th century, Eastern Orthodox monks built twenty-four monasteries atop these sheer cliffs for isolation and safety, creating a breathtaking blend of nature and human determination.
In the 21st century, a group of strong cyclists passed here in their way from Ljubljana to Athens with almost the same human determination.

Balkan Boulevard 2026
After Island hopping in Croatia, it was country hopping last week.
From Mostar in Bosnia we cycled over an old railway line to Dubrovnik in Croatia, followed by the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, and now in Tirana, the capital of Albania.

During the Cold War, the Albanian government built over 170.000 concrete bunkers across the landscapes, which are now transformed into cafes or museums. Probably you can't find burgers, because Albania is one of the few European countries with no McDonald’s branches.
And as a visitor it's good to know that when an Albanian nods, it actually means "no," and shaking the head means "yes".

Balkan Boulevard 2026
More island hopping in Croatia. Via Island Pag, Zadar, Split, Island Korčula, Island Pelješac now back at the mainland, more specifically : in Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina.
The city is famous for its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). This 16th-century Ottoman masterpiece arches over the emerald-green Neretva Riverand and was tragically destroyed during the war in the 1990s. The bridge was meticulously rebuilt as a symbol of reconciliation and is today a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Island hopping in Croatia. The country boasts a stunning archipelago of 1.244 islands, islets, reefs, and rocks scattered along its Adriatic coast. Despite the high total number, only around 50 of these islands are permanently inhabited. These days including a bunch of brave cyclists heading south towards Athens.

Tough stages to start in Slovenia including the iconic Vršic Pass (1.611 m) and the Mangart (2.055 m).

The Vršič Pass is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia located in the heart of the Julian Alps. The pass is famous for its exactly 50 sharply numbered hairpin bends. 24 bends on the way up, followed by another 26 on the descent into Trenta. A unique characteristic of the northern side is that the sharpest turns are still paved with the original cobblestones. The rest of the road is fully asphalted. The pass has a rich and tragic history. It was built between 1914 and 1916 by Russian prisoners of war to serve as a military supply route for the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. In March 1916, a massive avalanche killed over 400 of these prisoners.
