Rotterdam at night really is something else. We love it how our city chances when night falls. The Erasmus bridge lights up as bright as she can and buildings turn into nicely lit up towers. The difference between day and night is huge.
If you want to enjoy the best sunsets then the Erasmus bridge is a great place to go. But our favourite place is in front of Hotel New York at the end of the 'Wilhelminapier' (Wilhelminawarf). During the summer this is a true hotspot where a lot of people gather to enjoy a drink, some food and to see the lovely show that mother nature will host.
Our tour will end at the exact location. So we will leave you on the best spot of Rotterdam. The only thing you need to do is stay around and wait for the show to start. So don't hesitate at grab a drink and some food at Hotel New York, sit back and relax. We can't wait for all this to become normal again and make you happy!

Just like many others we went to the 'Kralingseplas' (Kralingse lake) this weekend. Because of the could weather of the last couple of days the entire lake was frozen. This was something we had never seen before!
Normally this lake is a hotspot in the summer for relaxing, BBQ-ing, sunbathing and other summer activities. But this year the lake turned into a winter hotspot. There were hundreds of people ice-skating on the fully frozen lake. Some were better then others. The conditions were perfect. Thick smooth ice, a lot of space for everybody to do this Corona prove and blue skies as far as you could see with a lovely bright sun.
The only thing was that it was pretty windy, but also that had an upside. Apparently there are sailboat which you can use on the ice. And they go fast! Really fast! They were in the middle of the lake which made it safe for the ice-skaters.
Hopefully winter is over now because we can't wait for the spring to come in and all the lovely colors come back! What do you miss the most about the spring?

The Rotterdam 'Wijnhaven' (Wine Harbor). It's an area with a lot of water, old and new buildings, hotels and ofcours a lot of history.
The 'Wijnhaven' is located next to the 'Oudehaven' (Old Harbor). You will find a lot of old boats here that have a permanent spot in the harbor. When you are in the 'Wijnhaven' you can see the glorious red 'Willemsbrug' (Willems bridge), ''t Witte Huis' (The White House) and the 'Kubuswoningen' (Cube Houses). This area played a great role in World War 2. It was from here that the Dutch army stopped the German army from crossing the 'Willemsbrug' and taking over Rotterdam. Marks of this battle are still visible in ''t Witte Huis'.
On a beautiful sunny day this area is a real hotspot. This is why we couldn't leave this harbor out of our tour route!

Rotterdam is such a quiet city these days. From the Erasmus bridge you have a great view over the city.
On the the North side, there are a lot of business buildings mixed with residential buildings.
On the South side, you will find the biggest buildings of the city.
If you cross the Erasmus bridge towards Rotterdam South, you can see the Euromast on the right. This tower is, for now, the highest structure of Rotterdam. If you look to the left you will see the Northern island. From here you can cross back over the river 'De Maas' by using the Willems bridge. This bridge stands out by its fiery red color.
This way you can circle back to the city center. You will be close to the 'Oudehaven' (Old Harbor). A perfect place to sit down for a drink and a snack.

As the clouds pass over the SS Rotterdam, the sun goes down, people roam the streets, boats leave the harbor and slowly Rotterdam changes into a city full of lights.
Katendrecht is a neighborhood that changed a lot over the years. What do you know about the history of Katendrecht?
Did you know that Katendrecht used to be a village next to Rotterdam? Rotterdam claimed Katendrecht and this way it became a part of Rotterdam. Rotterdam claimed Katendrecht and bought the lamd around it because they wanted to extend their harbor. Around 1900 Rotterdam dug out two harbors on both sides of Katendrecht, making Katendrecht a peninsula.

Last year with New Years everything still was 'normal'. Every year the national fireworks are in Rotterdam on the Erasmus bridge. This year was a little different. A couple weeks back they recorded a drone show here to welcome 2021.
Hopefully 2021 will be good to all of us, so that life can go back to 'normal' again. We wish you all the best for 2021 and we hope to see you sometime in Rotterdam!

This is the 'Binnenrotte'. This is de place where Rotterdam started. Around 1270 the first people who decided to live here built a dam in the river 'De Rotte', the Rotterdam. Even before this there was another village here called 'Rotta'. But because of multiple floodings during the 9th and 11th century, this got washed away. The people decided to take a different approach and built 'Rotterdam'.
This spot is a amazing spot as you look at the history.
First of all there is the 'St. Laurenskerk' (Church) that dates from 1450 and which survived the bombardment of 14 mei 1940.
Then you see this big open space, nikename ' De Landingsbaan' (The Landing Strip). Nowadays this is used as an outdoor market on Tuesday, Saturday and some Sundays. Before 1993 you would find a train viaduct here, but after the opening of the tunnel this wasn't needed anymore.
The next big this is the white building with yellow tubes along the sides. This is the city library of Rotterdam. Annually the have almost 2.5 million visitors and there are about 830.000 different things like books, cd's and other documents available here.
The following building with the pointy rooftop has the nickname 'Het Potlood' (The Pencil) for obvious reasons. In the back of this building you see the yellow 'Kubuswoningen' (Cube Houses).
The next white construction is a tram, metro and train stop. Because of its shape this got the nickname 'De Fluitketel' (The Whistling Kettle).
The last big highlight you will find here and the one you can not skip while you are in Rotterdam is the 'Markthal' (Markethall). This is a indoor market with a lot of different stands. You can spend hours in there an still find new stuff!
