Good morning from Sarajevo. On the pictures you find a small impression of the old town, dating back to Ottoman times. We arrived back here two days ago to enjoy summer in the city and SARAJEVO FILM FESTIVAL that starts later this week. And most importantly, to further develop the programs for our upcoming art, screenwriting and culinary retreats. The programs and exact dates will be announced this fall. In just a few days the 28th edition of Sarajevo Film Festival will take place in Bosnia’s sunny capital. What now is known as the biggest film festival in Southeast Europe actually started during the siege of Sarajevo the 90’s as a form of cultural resistance to war. Literally risen from the ashes like the majestic phoenix. This is a short story of that rise.

Last june the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina played a Nations League match as a visiting team against Montenegro. During the match Montenegrin supporters made a sympathetic food-related gesture that got the whole ex-Yugoslav region laughing. They held a banner stating that “Burek is with cheese”. A funny ‘provocation’ related to one of the most famous and favourite dishes of Bosnia and it’s neighbouring countries: pita. We will reveal the crux of this tasty inside joke at the end of this article. But first let’s take a deep dive into what makes pita such a fan favourite.
