Distilled from the report ‘Small islands, big challenges’ that was presented to Dutch Parliament (“Tweede Kamer”):

With the Blue Economy development Bonaire becomes the front runner in the Caribbean region.

The World Bank and the United Nations regard the Blue Economy development as the best strategy for Caribbean nations to achieve structural economic growth, to rise out of the middle income trap and to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). Blue Economy is considered the ideal formula for Small Developing States and for the Caribbean region in particular to achieve inclusive economic growth, reduce poverty, realize economic diversification and innovation while preserving natural resources.

With the Blue Destination concept, Bonaire sets course for the development of a Blue Economy on the island. As part of the Administrative Agreement (“Bestuursakkoord”) between Bonaire and the Kingdom government in The Hague, the knowledge and financial resources needed to bring about a Blue Economy development will be made available. This places Bonaire in a strong position to become the front runner in the Caribbean region.

Met de ontwikkeling van de blue economy wordt Bonaire ‘front runner’ van
de Caribische regio

Ontwikkeling van de blue economy wordt door de Wereldbank en door
de Verenigde Naties gezien als de beste strategie voor Caribische
landen om structurele welvaartsgroei te realiseren, om uit de middle
income trap te komen en om de SDG’s te realiseren. De blue economy
wordt gezien als het recept voor Small Island Developing States in het
algemeen en voor de Caribische regio in het bijzonder om inclusieve
economische groei te realiseren, armoede te bestrijden, economische
diversificatie te realiseren en te innoveren zonder dat dit ten koste gaat
van natuurlijke hulpbronnen.
