Gouda was by then become a very important city due to its location. An international trade route passed exactly through this city.

And although Gouda is known all around the world mainly for the homonymous cheese, this small but charming city has a lot to offer.

𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟓𝟖𝟒, 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝!

There were two previous failed attempts against the life of the leader of the Dutch revolt, William of Orange. Third time’s the charm, they say. This time, a Frenchman by the name of Balthasar Gérard managed to sneak into the Prinsenhof and delivered two shots that killed William.

Balthasar was a devoted Catholic who had heard about the bounty of 25.000 gold crowns on William of Orange’s head, who was now considered a traitor to the Church. Unfortunately for him, he was captured before he could reach the city walls. After days of torture and interrogation, Balthasar was executed in such a brutal way that even witnesses at the time were shocked at the sight of it.

This murder went down in history as the first recorded murder of a head of state with a handgun. The two holes left by the bullets can still be found at the Prinsenhof museum. And although every Dutch student learns the last words William of Orange said before dying, it’s likely he died instantly.

𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧.

In 1863, with the Emancipation Act, the Netherlands abolished slavery in the Dutch West Indies.
The slave owners were compensated with 300 guilders per slave, and the former slaves were still forced into a 10-year employment contract, mainly because the Dutch government was scared of an economic collapse.

Every year, Surinamese and Caribbean communities celebrate Ketikoti (“the chain is broken” in Sranantongo, one of the languages of Suriname), and it is a very important moment to remember that the flourishing of the Netherlands was also built on slavery.

It was, and still is, very popular among the Dutch.

While looking for an easy way towards the East, the VOC (Dutch East India Company) hired explorer Henry Hudson (second slide) to set sail. His fleet landed on the island of Manhattan on June 10th 1610, where a few Dutch settlers founded what would become the most influential city in the world.
