Hoorn has 415 national monuments. 65 of those monuments are located at the street Grote Oost, seen on this photo. Most of these houses, including the huge church, date back to the 17th century.

Next to a collection of national monuments you have the Hendrik de Keyser Association. Hendrick de Keyser is committed to maintaining architecturally or historically important buildings and their interior. The Association does this by acquiring buildings, restoring them and renting them out. Once acquired buildings are never relinquished. Out of all their 427 owned properties, 20 are located in Hoorn.

The Schoorlse Duinen (Dunes of Schoorl) is a nature reserve at the coast in Noord Holland. Here you will find the largest (the highest being 55m!) dunes of The Netherlands.

With over 60km of hike/bike/horse routes, a play area in the forest for the children, a beach, the forest, wild animals such as Scottish Highlanders and abandoned army bunkers one day is just not enough if you want to visit this beautiful place.

Oh, and don’t forget to have a wonderful lunch, dinner or drink at one of the beach restaurants 😏 or bring your own and have a picknick 🧺

This beautiful building was built in the 17th century. It has two floors and an attic. But don’t let it’s majestic appearance fool you; it only consists of 22 square meters. The building tilts forwards, this happened because originally the facade was made of wood but it got once replaced by a stone facade which is heavier than wood.

The building had several purposes so far; it started out as a ‘water- en vuurhuys’ (water- and firehouse) where people could get warm water. After that a doll/bear shop sold its puppets here. Then it became an atelier and nowadays it is a barbershop.

Hoorn is the perfect place to eat fresh fish. My favourite place is the Wormsbecher Vishandel. I love to eat kibbeling, paling, vispatat, haring, lekkerbek, seaweedsalad... a lot actually! What is you favourite fish?

At the Roode Steen stands a statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, along with many restaurants and bars you can also find the there. I find the museum very beautiful and have visited it many times.

Jan Pieterszoon Coen (8 January 1587 – 21 September 1629) was an officer of the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia (VOC) in the early seventeenth century, holding two terms as its Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. He was the founder of Batavia, the capital city of the Dutch East Indies.
