📜 Hidden Stories of Our Ancestors Come to Light

Exciting news for anyone with Zeeland roots! The Zeeland Archives has completed the digitization of the records of 25 Zeeland manorial estates (ambachtsheerlijkheden), making centuries of historical documents available online.

These records offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of our ancestors—revealing information about land ownership, local government, legal matters, rights, obligations, and everyday life in Zeeland’s villages and communities.

Every newly accessible document has the potential to uncover forgotten family stories and provide valuable clues for genealogical research. What was once hidden away in archive boxes can now help us better understand the lives, challenges, and achievements of those who came before us.

History isn’t just about dates and names—it’s about people. And thanks to projects like this, their stories can be told once again.

🌿 Discovering the past, one record at a time.

The Zeeuwse bolus originated in the province of Zeeland in the 17th century. Its roots are closely connected to Sephardic Jewish bakers who fled Portugal and Spain during the Inquisition and settled in Dutch port cities, bringing their baking traditions with them.
These bakers introduced sweet, spiral-shaped pastries enriched with sugar and spices. Over time, the recipe adapted to local ingredients and tastes. The modern Zeeuwse bolus is made from soft white dough rolled in generous amounts of brown sugar and cinnamon, then shaped into a tight spiral. During baking, the sugar caramelizes into a sticky, glossy coating.
Unlike many pastries that spread nationwide, the bolus has remained strongly regional. Zeeland bakeries still produce it fresh daily, and it is considered a point of local pride. Though similar pastries exist elsewhere in Europe, the Zeeuwse bolus maintains its own distinct identity in shape, texture, and sweetness.
Soft inside. Caramelized outside. A pastry shaped by migration, trade, and regional tradition.
