As sea water is pumped into the first evaporating ponds, the water flows to the following condensers, evaporating on the way and thereby increasing its salinity, algae start to grow, flourish and finaly die. The salt water wil turn from clear to green and as the flow continues and additional evaporation takes place and the salinity increases into brown color.

Finally as the water becomes saturated in salt, now so called ‘brine’, it is pumped into the crystallizing ponds where upon further evaporation the salt crystallizes and forms a salt layer on the floors, which eventually is harvested. In these ponds you see the characteristic pink color which is caused a microorganism called halophilic bacteria, which thrive in high salinity brine and in reality are not bacteria but single cell life-forms.

They have no effect on the quality of the salt. The cell membranes contain carotenoid pigments which give the crystallizers the pink-red color.

Slave huts & Obelisks: These huts were constructed in 1850 during the slavery time, and served as camping facilities for slaves working in the salt ponds to collect and ship the salt, one of Bonaire's most important export product.
These huts were used as sleeping quarters and place to put away personal belongings of the working team. Each Friday afternoon the slaves walked seven hours to Rincon to weekend with their families, returning each Sunday.
Four Obelisks on Bonaire were used as navigational shore markers to guide ships coming in to load. The obelisks were painted red, white, blue and orange (the colours of the Dutch flag).

In 1993 Dutch Nationals, Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman, established a donkey sanctuary on Bonaire for sick, wounded and orphaned donkeys: Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.
Visitors can make a tour with their own car amongst the hundreds of donkeys in our big park. The animals will gladly come over to meet you and to put their snouts through the car windows.

Went up a brisk walk up Marjan Hill Park, which is 178 m tall and offers a view of the entire city, the surrounding islands, and the nearby mountains of Mosor and Kozjak.

The hill was intensively forested (large parts of it were barren until then), many recreational facilities were built, including jogging tracks, a road system encircling the peninsula, a maritime research institute, the Split City Zoo (now fallen into disrepair), botanical garden (recently abandoned) and a water pipeline reaching all the way to the top of the hill. There is also a small rustic early 13th century AD church situated on Marjan Hill.
The authorities also constructed the city weather station and two "vidilice", or "look-out points", as resting places connected with a long stairway all the way to the Diocletian's Palace, the "Riva" promenade and the rest of the city center.

At the end of the trip we had a late lunch at the famous Bokamorra Pizzaurant & Cocktails, just at the foot of the hill ...😋

A short Easter/Spring Break in Split, Croatia. Sunny and a very moderate warm weather.

Split, a town on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, is known for its beaches and the fortresslike complex at its center, Diocletian's Palace, erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century.
Once home to thousands, its sprawling remains include more than 200 buildings. Within its white stone walls and under its courtyards are a cathedral and numerous shops, bars, cafes, hotels and houses.

Spent a few relaxing nights at this Center Parcs Resort Port Zelande. Very nice area at the Oosterschelde. For watersport lovers, this will be a nice place to be.
The whole resort is being renovated to accommodate the requirements of modern tourists. I could almost smell the paint in our two bedrooms/4 person cottage near the pier, with a magnificent romantic Sunset View from our bedroom ...!😎😘
For the children, there are a lot of activity options to keep them occupied all day, so that parents can relax and unwind ... 😂👫
