In 1899, Kristian Birkeland built the world's first Northern Lights observatory on the top of Mt. Alta is a great choice for vistors seeking to experience the magic of the Northern Lights. As since year 2000, it has been named the City of the Northern Lights. The stable climate with many days of clear sky and in general very good weather conditions are reasons why several international scientific expeditions carried out in Alta.

Did you know that Alta was home to the largest industry north of the Arctic Circle? ⚒️

Kåfjord Church was built in 1837 to serve the community that grew up around the Kåfjord copperworks. The copperworks, which was established on the site in 1826, grew to become the largest industry north of the Arctic Circle at the time.

Today, the church in Kåfjord is the only remaining building on the site from this period, and one of the few buildings in Alta that was not burned down during World War II. You can follow the cultural trail through the area and experience the remains of some buildings that were once part of one of the most important industrial sites in Northern Norway.

Arctic gold 🧡 The cloudberry season is here, and Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge has started gathering this year’s golden treasure.

With buckets in hand, they head out into the landscape in search of the small, flavourful berries that grow wild in the North. Cloudberries are a highly sought-after delicacy, offering a distinct taste of the region, and now they are making their way to the plate.

For locals, cloudberries are more than just an ingredient. They are a taste of tradition, nature, and celebration. Many look forward to enjoying cloudberries on Christmas Eve, often served as "multekrem", a classic dessert that has earned a cherished place on many Christmas tables.
