Sometimes, once you’re committed to one of these crossings, the weather gets properly spicy.
When that happens, the small details matter. Snow walls go up around camp. Guy lines are checked, tensioned and set at the right angle. Tents are aligned properly to the wind. The stove comes on, the team gets settled, and you lie there listening to the world roaring and pulling at the fabric around you.
For many people, this is one of the highlights. Learning how to live well in those conditions is a huge part of polar training — and it is often when you feel most alive.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to camp on a frozen lake during one of our polar training courses?

This was filmed just after a crevasse rescue session with the group. Ropes packed away, pulks lined up on the ice, Hilleberg Keron 3 GT tents dug in, and stoves starting to run.

We use Fjellpulken Traverse 165 pulks and Hilleberg Keron 3GT tents because these courses are built around the real routines of polar travel: moving efficiently, managing kit, setting camp properly, staying warm, and working as a team when it’s cold and tiring.

It’s not just about learning individual skills. When you stop, it’s vital to work efficiently as a team — get the tent up, get the stove on, and get food and fluids back in you.

Crossing of the Western Sahara

We haven’t officially launched this expedition yet, but around 90% of the places have already gone.

This is a 140km desert crossing on foot, travelling as a small team through the Western Sahara. At the start of the expedition, you will meet your two camels—one for you and some kit, the second mainly for water—and begin learning the work of a cameleteer: how to load them, lead them, care for them and find a good route through the desert together.

The camels are not just there in the background. They shape the pace of the day, the rhythm of the journey and the way we move through the landscape.

Each day the ground changes beneath us: hard desert tracks, soft sand, dry lakebeds and open dunes. We learn to read the terrain as we move, choosing lines that work for the team, the camels and the conditions.

At night, we make wild camps beneath the open sky, cook around the fire and sleep under the stars. In the morning, we wake to cold sand, early light and another day of distance ahead.

The desert is never empty. There are plants, tracks, birds and small signs of life everywhere if you slow down enough to notice them.

This is simple, physical expedition travel: changing ground, camels, firelight, stars, desert life and a small team moving through a remarkable landscape.

If you are interested in one of the final places, get in touch as soon as possible to apply for a place on the team.

It’s a wrap for us in mainland Scandinavia for this season.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us over the winter — from the first training days through to the longer crossings. Good decisions made, tough days managed well, and plenty learned along the way.

Conditions gave us a bit of everything this year. Proper cold spells, some hard weather windows, and a few of those calm, clear days where everything just works.

We’ll take a short pause, regroup, and start lining things up again for next winter.

If you’re already thinking about getting involved next season, now’s a good time to start putting the groundwork in.

When your pulk is heavy and you're already knackered, Arctic travel can feel like a pretty raw deal 😣. If you prefer an easy ride and a sunny beach then expeditions might not be for you... But you won't remember the Bahamas like you'd remember this in 5 years time 😀👍.

Leaving places like Sarek is always hard...
You always hope to hold on to the peace and calm it gives you but know that normal life will make it slowly fade away.

That's why we return - year after year, decade on decade. ❄️

Hard work breaking through soft snow on Huldreheimen. All smiles from Paul though 😁! Our guides are a cheerful bunch and really enjoy the work we do - it's very hard not to when your office is this stunning!

They'll lead you to the ends of the earth, coach you through the hard bits and keep you safe in a storm. All while smiling (well, most of the time 😉).

Finishing a day tired and satisfied before bunking down in your warm little tent is one of the best bits of Arctic expeditions 👌. It's always worth going out for a final look at were you are though before climbing into your sleeping bag. Night time on Arctic plateaus really is stunning! 🌙 ❄️
