🪨 A circle of stones, standing in silence for nearly two thousand years 🌾
🧭 On a quiet ridge in Hadeland, eight upright blocks form a perfect circle around a single centre stone, locally known as Kongssteinen, the King's Stone. The stones are placed exactly according to the eight points of the compass, and that precision is no accident. This is a cosmic diagram in granite, the world laid out around a sacred centre, the way Iron Age people in Hadeland understood it 🌅
🌬️ Most stone circles in Norway are built with seven, nine or eleven stones, with nine considered the holiest number in the old Norse religion. Bilden does something quieter and cleverer. Eight outer stones for the eight directions of the horizon, one centre stone holding them together. Count them all, and you arrive at nine. A monument that obeys both the geometry of the sky and the sacred number of the gods 🌿
🔥 Beneath the stones, almost certainly, lies a grave. The few circles like it that have been excavated hold simple cremation burials, charcoal from the funeral pyre, burnt bone, sometimes a few small objects given to the dead for their onward journey. Bilden has never been excavated, so we cannot say for certain who rests here. But someone of standing in this early farming community was laid down at the heart of this ring, and their family raised the stones around them 👑
🌳 Iron Age Scandinavians did not simply bury their dead and walk away. The grave was a doorway. Through a practice called útiseta, "sitting out", descendants would come at night to call on their ancestors, to seek guidance, to renew their claim to the land. The Old Norse word óðal, the right of a family to its soil, was counted three, six or nine generations back, and it was written into the landscape itself through monuments like this one. Bilden was the family's deed of inheritance, signed in stone 🪨
✨ Walk between the stones at Bilden today and you walk inside an Iron Age family's idea of the world, with the four winds, the sacred centre, and an ancestor still keeping watch over the land 🌫️
