The state Finnmark is one of the wildlife capitals of Northern Norway. Here are a few things worth knowing about the wildlife you can find around Kirkenes:

🦌 Between 5,000 and 7,000 reindeer roam Sør-Varanger, the municipality of Kirkenes — and yes, they have right of way. In Norway, only Sami people, the indigenous people of northern Europe, are permitted to own and herd reindeer.

🐻 The Pasvik Valley, 30 minutes from Kirkenes, is home to Norway's densest brown bear population and over 220 bird species. The bears here are genetically more connected to Russian bears than to Norwegian ones.

🦀 The Kirkenes region is famous for its king crab. The king crab in the Barents Sea was introduced by Russian scientists in the 1960s. It can weigh up to 8 kg and reach 1.8 metres across its leg span.

🦅 White-tailed eagles, wolverines, lynx, and moose round out the neighbourhood. The Barents Sea brings humpback whales, orcas, and seals.

One of Northern Norway’s most underrated beaches, and most people don't know about it 👀.

Grense Jakobselv, around 60 km from Kirkenes, is where the Norwegian Russian border reaches the Barents Sea. Remote, wild, and well worth the drive.

Three things that will blow your mind about Grense Jakobselv:

⛪ A tiny stone church was built to reinforce Norway's claim to the area: King Oscar II’s Chapel was built in 1869 to reinforce Norway’s territorial claim to this remote corner of the country.

🚴🏼‍♀️ It sits on one of Europe’s longest cycling routes:
Grense Jakobselv marks the official northern start of the Iron Curtain Trail (EuroVelo 13), a 10,550 km long-distance cycling route tracing the historic Cold War border through Europe, from Northern Norway all the way to the Black Sea.

🌅 You can watch the sun refuse to set: Visit around the midnight sun season and you can stand beside the Barents Sea late at night with the sun still above the horizon.

Norwegians have a word for cabin life: "hyttefeber" = cabin fever (but the good kind 😉).

For most Norwegians, the hytte is not a holiday. It's a reset. A place to chop wood, drink coffee outside, slow down, and reconnect with the nature that surrounds them. No agenda. No noise. Just the basics, done well 😌.

Last weekend, we shared that with two guests from Canada at Namdalen Wilderness Lodge — about 20-30 minutes from Kirkenes, in the Pasvik Valley. No light pollution, no running water, no other people, but a wood-fired sauna, a campfire, and lots of coffee outside.

It's rustic. It's simple. But that's the point ❤️.

Yes! Cycling to the Russian border is not our usual e-fatbike route, but that's the thing about a small company: no fixed scripts. We ask, we listen, and we build the tour around you 😊.

Two sisters reached out about the summer e-fatbike tour and asked if it was possible to cycle to the official border crossing at Storskog. So we asked about their fitness level, adjusted the route, and that's where we went.

As for the last picture: at one point Henrik could see me leading a group along the border corridor on our Russian Border Hike. He waved, but we didn't see him 😅.
