Hyvää Itsenäisyyspäivää, Finland!
Today I celebrate the spirit of Finland - sisu — a land of shimmering lakes, endless forests, soumi rokkia, and skies painted with northern lights. A country where resilience meets beauty, and where people carry warmth even in the coldest winter.

On this National Day, I honour the HAPPY Finnish people: their sisu, courage, their creativity, their quiet strength, and their joyful traditions. From the melodies of Sibelius to the laughter in saunas, from the snowy silence of Lapland to the vibrant streets of Helsinki — Finland is a symphony of nature and humanity.

May this day remind us of the power of unity, the gift of freedom, and the beauty of belonging. Kiitos, Finland, for inspiring the world with your light. I really love Finland! Best greetings from Norway. Friend of Finland, Stein Morten

Memories from Taivalkoski in July 2017 - located in the North-East Finland. Far in the forrest, I observed the sun dipped low behind the endless pine forests, golden light stretched across the vast lake, turned the water into a shimmering mirror of fire and sky.

A great old sea eagle soars low ready to catch a fish. Eagles and seagulls benefit most from fishing in rapids and cormorants, although all are eager to steal each other's catch if they can. The young birds quickly learn how to eat the fish before other take it. This old sea eagle could be the mother of a few young and immature birds. A white-tailed eagle can live up to over 30 years! How I tried to become Santa’s new best friend. I think I am never too old to meet Santa Claus - at least that’s what I tell myself. The Finns claim to have the real Santa, based in Rovaniemi, Lapland. Naturally, I wanted to test this and see if he could fulfill my wishes. As lucky I was, I ran into him at Helsinki Airport. He was the ultimate Christmas rockstar - red suit, long snowy beard, twinkle in his eye and a smile that could make a snowman melt. If anyone could sprinkle some Christmas magic into my adult life, it had to be him. Grabbed my chance, shook hands with Santa and whispered my wishes. He nodded convincingly, as if my wishes were already on his list. Was he real? Who knows. But you better believe I’m eagerly waiting - mailbox open, chimney cleaned, and wishes pending.

White-tailed eagles are found along rocky coastlines, estuaries and lochs near the sea - hence their alternative name of 'sea eagle'. They eat fish, rabbits, hares and other birds. Warmest congratulations to Finland on Independence Day (Itsenäisyyspäivä), 6th December! This special day offers Finns a moment to reflect on their national identity, the hard-won freedom they cherish, and the profound sacrifices that secured their independence. As Finland enters the heart of the Christmas season, Independence Day and Christmas (Joulu) remain two uniquely cherished occasions. While both are celebrated with reverence, tradition, and joy, each reflects Finland’s deeply held values in its own way. Independence Day embodies respect for heritage and the unity of the nation, while Christmas highlights love for nature, the warmth of family, and the spirit of community. Together, these holidays beautifully showcase Finland’s enduring cultural pride and its commitment to preserving what truly matters.

The Finns are best at Christmas celebration. They certainly know how to embrace the Christmas spirit! Finland is often considered one of the best places to experience Christmas, and for several good reasons. Holiday celebrations start early in Finland, with a series of raucous and festive events called "pikkujoulut". Read more on BBC Travel:
