Anyone else a bit afraid of heights but also an adrenaline ju**ie? Then this hike is for you! Kjerabolton is one of the most scenic and exhilarating hikes you will ever complete. The views and challenge to reach the summit, combined with stepping out onto the terrifying yet electrifying Kjerag rock (boulder in between two large rocks with an over 2400 foot drop into the fjord 🫣😳) makes it a hike you will never forget. The adrenaline rush from it is truly invigorating. See our ‘How to Hike Kjeragbolten’ guide for more information and all our tips on completing this hike. 🎥

Crevasses are cracks that form in a glacier. Some are small, others can be wide and many metres deep. During the late summer here on Svalbard, crevasses are usually uncovered and clearly visible and therefore less dangerous. During the rest of the year, the glaciers are covered by snow and therefore these openings in the ice are not visible. During those months it is possible to fall in them by walking on a snow roof that does not support a person’s weight. In order to avoid fatal accidents, or in any case to reduce the damage of a fall, people usually move across the glaciers in a rope team. In this way, if someone falls into a crevasse, it is possible for them to be held by their climbing companions and later pulled out.
During the Arctic Nature Guide course at the University of Svalbard, we practised glacier traverse in a rope team. In this way we were able to understand what will be hidden under the snow as soon as winter arrives.
