Mountains on Senja island 🏔️

There are hundreds of mountains and trails across Senja.

Some are famous. The ones you see in every photo, the trails everyone wants to tick off, the viewpoints that have become icons of the island.

But then there are the others.

The trails that turn somewhere before the famous viewpoint. The unnamed peaks. The paths with no sign and no crowd.

These places can be just as beautiful, if not more.

Because up there, you might have the whole mountain to yourself. No voices, no footsteps, no one waiting for the perfect photo.
Just the wind, the silence and the feeling that, for a moment, this little piece of Senja belongs only to you.

Maybe that’s the magic of Senja.

It was never meant to be discovered through one famous mountain and one iconic view.

It’s an island to wander through. To take the trail that looks interesting. To turn left when everyone else turns right. To climb a peak that doesn’t even have a name and find a view you’ll remember forever.

UNDERSTANDING THE SEASONS IN THE ARCTIC

Northern Norway doesn’t really follow the usual four-season calendar.
Here, the year is shaped by light, snow, darkness and the changing rhythm of the Arctic.

Each season offers a completely different way to experience the North.

Planning a trip to Northern Norway can be surprisingly difficult.
Lofoten? Senja? Tromsø? Nordkapp?
They are all spectacular, but they offer different experiences.

Tromsø is the easiest place to start if you want a mix of city life and Arctic experiences.
It has the largest choice of restaurants, hotels, museums and activities.
It also offers easy access to Northern Lights tours, whale watching, dog sledding and other winter adventures.
t’s a great choice if you want convenience, city vibes, and an easy base for exploring the Arctic without needing a rental car.

Lofoten is probably the most famous and most visited destination in Northern Norway.
Dramatic mountains rise directly from the sea, fishing villages sit along the coastline and almost every corner looks like a postcard.
It’s perfect for photographers, hikers and first-time visitors who want to experience some of the most iconic landscapes in Norway.
The downside? Its popularity means more visitors, especially during the summer months.

Senja, often called Norway in miniature, has many of the landscapes people travel to Northern Norway to find: dramatic mountains, white beaches, deep fjords and winding coastal roads.
But compared to Lofoten, it still feels quieter and less discovered.

It’s a great choice for travellers who want the iconic Arctic scenery, but also value space, slower travel and the feeling of finding something beyond the usual itinerary.

Vesterålen is often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, but that is exactly what makes it special.
The region offers dramatic coastlines, wide open landscapes, fishing villages and some of the best opportunities for wildlife experiences in Northern Norway. It is particularly known for whale watching in summer and is a great destination for travellers who want to combine Arctic nature with a quieter, less crowded atmosphere.

Vesterålen is a good choice if you want to experience the coast, wildlife and wide-open landscapes without following the most popular tourist route.

I wish I could say that July on Senja was like the first two pictures. But the rest of the photos are a much more accurate representation. 🌧️
We had so many plans, so many things we wanted to do. But the truth is, the weather kept us indoors a little more than we expected.

We have these mountains right on our doorstep, so we can afford to wait before going out hiking . If we didn’t manage to get out as planned, we can always do it next time.

But for many of you who travelled to Northern Norway and spent your vacation here in the rain and bad weather, you might have gone home disappointed.
Maybe you didn’t see those epic views, didn’t experience a midnight sun hike, or didn’t get to explore the places on your bucket list.
But... this is Norway. The weather plays by its own rules, and we have to adapt.
Are the fjords any less spectacular when it rains? For us, they actually look even more majestic with the clouds.

That’s why you’ll always hear people in Norway say: „There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” And it’s 100% true.
You’re going to the Arctic, so you don’t pack as if you’re going to the beach.
Bring good hiking shoes, a waterproof jacket, and waterproof pants and you’ll be just fine 😉

The nature here is out of this world. If you learn to appreciate it, even when it’s raining, then every time the weather clears, it feels even more rewarding 😊

Norwegian summer is not for the faint hearted 🫣
We ordered summer. Northern Norway delivered a bit of everything with lots of rain this year 🌧️
Sometimes you get the midnight sun, warm evenings and clear skies. Other times you get four seasons in one day.
This year midnight sun season was definitely missing „the sun”.
Some say it was the worse July in decades.
North is unpredictable, you never know what the next day holds. But it makes us appreciate every single moment with good weather 😉

WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT NORTHERN NORWAY? ☀️❄️
There is no single “best” time to visit the Arctic. The right time depends on what you want to experience.

JANUARY – MARCH ❄️
Deep winter, snow-covered mountains and the best conditions for winter activities.
February and March are especially popular for skiing and enjoying longer days while the landscape is still covered in snow.
Northern Lights are also a major highlight of this season.

APRIL – MAY 🌱
The Arctic off-season. Snow may still cover the mountains, while lower areas begin to melt.
Hiking trails can be wet and muddy, and there are fewer guided activities available.
But if you prefer quiet landscapes and no crowds, this can be a peaceful time to visit.

JUNE – AUGUST ☀️
Summer in the Arctic. The Midnight Sun allows for endless days of hiking, exploring and photography.
June and July are ideal for experiencing the Midnight Sun from the mountains, while August often brings fewer visitors and can still offer beautiful summer weather.

SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 🍂✨
One of the most underrated times to visit Northern Norway. The landscapes begin to change colour, the days can still be surprisingly warm, and the first Northern Lights return as the nights grow darker.
From mid-September onwards, your chances of seeing the Aurora increase significantly.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 🌌❄️
The Arctic turns into a true winter wonderland. By late October and early November, you may already find snow-covered mountains and the first proper winter conditions. December brings the Polar Night, when the sun stays below the horizon, but the landscape is still illuminated by beautiful blue Arctic light.

So, when should you visit?
Start with what you want to do. Hike beneath the Midnight Sun? Chase the Northern Lights? Explore snowy mountains? Go whale watching? Or simply experience the Arctic changing through the seasons?

There is no wrong answer. Every season shows you a different side of Northern Norway.

5 hikes you can’t miss on Senja 🏔️ (our subjective opinion).

Senja is full of incredible mountains, dramatic coastlines and views that look almost unreal. Choosing only five is impossible, but these are the hikes that we think are worth the trip.

1. Hesten  A true Senja classic with the iconic view of Segla. It’s one of those must see places. Perfect for midnight sun, magical with autumn colours and surprisingly accessible in winter (with the right gear).

2. Husfjellet (Mary’s favourite) A longer hike with constantly changing scenery and a huge reward at the top. The panoramic views are incredible, but the moment when you see Oksneset (the famous “Devil’s Teeth”) from the top is something special. A hike that keeps getting better with every step.

3. Barden (Peter’s favourite) A proper trekking day and one of our favourite adventures on Senja. The 4 km climb takes you to breathtaking views that feel almost like you’ve stepped into The Lord of the Rings. Our favourite season? Summer and autumn, especially coming down after sunset with the mountains behind you and northern lights dancing above your head.

4. Saltberget  A true hidden gem on southern Senja. Less famous, more peaceful and absolutely beautiful. Our favourite time to visit is autumn, when the colours are at their best and the sunset is breathtaking.

5. Segla  The most famous mountain on Senja. Even though it’s not one of our personal favourites, we still think it deserves a spot on this list. If you have extra time on the island, you should definitely hike it once. The views are spectacular, but keep in mind that the panorama from the very top is partly blocked by large boulders.

If you only have time for one hike, we would personally choose one of the four mentioned above. Segla is (a little bit) about saying “I hiked Segla”, but the views still won’t disappoint.
