Double the Norwegian, Double the Fun😊🥳
Imagine having two distinct ways of writing everything — signs, books, school essays, government documents... Twice the fun, right? Welcome to the wonderful world of Norwegian!
There are two written standards of the Norwegian language:
📗Bokmål – The "big city cousin." Smooth, mainstream, and familiar. Bokmål evolved from the Danish used during centuries of Danish rule, with Norwegian flavor added later.
📕Nynorsk – Literally “New Norwegian.” The "mountain cousin" from the west – proud, traditional, and a bit more rustic. Created in the 1800s by linguist Ivar Aasen, who travelled around Norway collecting dialects to reconstruct a more authentically Norwegian language, free from Danish influence.
Together, they form a linguistic family reunion — you never know which cousin you’ll run into, but both are distinctly Norwegian. 🇳🇴
Spoiler alert: Blame the Danes, and a passionate linguist from Ørsta!
