While observations on the movement are often limited by the speed of what is happening in front of us, retrospective analysis allows you to identify health markers and anthropogenic impacts (such as gear ingestion), that would otherwise remain invisible. Did this orca 'steal' fish from commercial or recreational fishing and if so, is this a learned behaviour? Was the line attached to a fish previously caught and then consumed by the orca by chance?
These unnoticed moments can be captured by anyone and provide vital data for evolving theories on foraging behavior, depredation, and the environmental stressors facing apex predators like these. It also opens the eyes of anyone who frequently encounters these animals to look out for repeat observations which might offer more detail.
