Orcas hunting herring 🐟 The orcas in Norway use a feeding method called carousel feeding where they work together to gather the herring into tighter bait balls and drive them towards the surface. They also use their tails to create a pressure wave that stuns the fish, so it's easier for them to pick the fish up. In the video, you can hear the tail slap 💥🐟👂

The video was taken while standing on the deck of our boat MS Sylvkallen, with a GoPro attached to a pole, hoping for the best to capture the whales underneath. It requires the right conditions, along with eliminating user error such as pointing the camera in the complete wrong direction, not pressing record, or forgetting to put the memory card in ✨ 😄

How many orcas can you count? 🖤🤍

Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend ✨

Calm, shared moments like this are special. It's not always about the action and big wow factors. It's also important to slow down and be in the moment. Maybe even get a feeling of connection? Not necessarily (only) with the whales, but also a wider sense that us humans can hopefully coexist with others 🌍

A small collection of photos from our 2025/26 winter season in Tromsø 🐳❄️ The season exceeded our expectations, and we are incredibly grateful to have been able to spend amazing days out at sea with so many enthusiastic and lovely whale watchers. We hope we were able to give our guests memorable encounters and connections with the wildlife we are so privileged to spend our days with. The weather and the conditions are not always the easiest up here, it takes time and patience, but it is also incredibly rewarding and we wouldn't have it any other way. We are humbled and touched (there's been tears, really) by the super nice feedback we got, and by the support and cooperation we got from our guests, families, friends, and colleagues both on land and at sea. Being a small, privately owned business has its quirks and challenges, but we think it is a strength as well. We look forward to more adventures at sea! A big thank you from all of us to all of you! ✨

We finished with our winter whale watching season in Tromsø last Friday, and now will continue with fjord cruises to Sommarøy until end of the month ✨ The herring made a move out of the fjords, and so did the orcas, humpbacks and fin whales. We were incredibly lucky to spend some days with s***m whales in amazing weather too. The last few days we've been exploring the fjords and shorelines around Sommarøy, and other wildlife and nature's details have not disappointed ✨ We have seen moose, seals, otters, and eagles in beautiful surroundings. And of course the sun! After two months below the horizon, we finally get to see it again 🌞

Looking forward to the next few days exploring and spotting wildlife! 👀

If we had to use only one word to describe the first week of 2026, it would be cold! ❄️ But it has all been worth a few frozen fingers and toes 😃 We have had the pleasure to witness multiple feedings, nice calm encounters, and today topped it off with a sighting of pilot whales! A species that is quite regularly seen in Northern Norway during the warmer months, but it's fairly safe to say that today was the first time pilot whales have been seen in this area in winter. Life at sea is always full of surprises ✨

Nice and cold weather seems to be continuing, and we can't wait to see what the rest of January will bring us!

Godt nytt år! Happy New Year! We hope your 2026 will be like a day in whale watching can be: sometimes you have to go through some rough seas to get there, but there are many moments of awe and wonder, and in the end you are grateful for new memories and many experiences richer! ✨
