Where to look for reindeer in Trøndelag? 🦌

While exploring Røros and its history, you might notice the significance of reindeer in the region.

Not only are some of the best reindeer products from Røros, by , but reindeer can also be spotted far and wide in the surrounding region.

Go on a roadtrip from Trondheim to Røros (and back over the mountains via Selbu) and get a chance to witness reindeer up close!

Some of the highlights along the road include:

- Eafossen (the waterfall seen in the video!)
- Jentene på Tunet ( - award winning chocolate producer, located in Selbu)
- Reindeer (especially between Røros and Selbu, you have a chance to see many on the mountains)

👋 Would you like to meet local Norwegians and try activities that are a little out of the ordinary? Visit the coastal gem Bessaker! 🌊

Bessaker is a beautiful village by the coast in Fosen, Trøndelag. Here, you can enjoy unique activities that tell you a lot about the people and the local culture.

Did you know that Bessaker is the smallest place on the Norwegian mainland where Hurtigruten stops?

🐑 “For example, we arrange sheep p**p bingo for tourists who arrive on cruise ships. At first, we thought, ‘This is silly’, but it turned out to be something people really enjoy,” says Knut Johan Monkan from Coastal Host and Visit Fosen.

Guessing which square the sheep will p**p in first is just one of many original experiences the people of Bessaker offer. If you visit this small village, just 2.5 hours from Trondheim, you can also enjoy:

POV: you stopped for local food on Hitra and made a few new friends 🦌

We visit the beautiful islands of Hitra and Frøya, along the coast of Trøndelag, this past weekend - and had to make a stop at Dalpro, a local food producer (absolutely delicious by the way!) where they keep animals like elk, llamas and geese 🥰

A visit to Dalpro is an experience in itself: not only because of the food you can buy in their own farm shop - but also for the fact that you can meet some of the animals that live on the farm, including multiple llamas, a ton of elk (not your regular deer, but the bigger variant), rabbits and geese ✨️

Did you know that Hitra, as an island, has one of the most dense populations of elk in the entirety of Norway? While driving around the island, we saw tens of them in the fields and meadows 😱

A visit to Hitra, or a journey on the way from/to Frøya, is not complete without a visit to Dalpro 📍

Visit the Nidaros Cathedral:

Known as the northernmost pilgrims destination in the world, as well as it being a place of significant cultural importance - the Nidaros Cathedral has existed for nearly 1,000 years. Trondheim is home to a variety of museums: from music to art and Middle Ages museums can be found in the city.

Visit Festningen:

Kristiansten festning, locally known as Festningen, is a sight to behold. The same can be said for the view over the city, that you get while visiting the old fortress.

A little tip from the Explore Trøndelag team: after visiting Festningen, walk down towards the city. Enjoy the view from the Old Town Bridge and take a stroll through the cozy streets of Bakklandet.

3 places to visit in Namdalen 📍

Sør-Gjæslingan:
A protected fishing village of significant cultural importance, located along the coast of Namdalen. Explore the history of the village, and maybe even spend the night in a "rorbu" (fishermen's cabin)! ✨️

Jøatrappa:
If your goal, while hiking, is to reach new heights and have a great view at the end, then Jøatrappa is something for you! After 932 steps on these stairs, the view will be worth the climb 😍

Leka:
A geology island like no other - as if a small piece of the Grand Canyon broke off and drifted towards Norway. Enjoy the unique landscape, watch sea eagles soaring above and learn more about the history of an island that has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. 🏝
