Everest Region Weather Forecast: Rain Likely to Persist Through August 23

KATHMANDU: Weather conditions in Nepal’s Everest region are expected to remain predominantly wet and cloudy over the next five days, with trekkers likely to encounter rain, low cloud and limited mountain visibility along parts of the Khumbu trail.

A five-day weather forecast reviewed by shows particularly wet conditions around Dingboche, one of the major acclimatisation stops on the Everest Base Camp route. The forecast indicates a daytime temperature of about 11°C and a nighttime low of 1°C today (August 19). Temperatures are expected to remain around 9–11°C during the day and 1–2°C at night through August 23, with rain or showers forecast each day.

The weather information also shows rainy conditions in Lukla the major gate way to EBC, with daytime temperatures around 18–19°Cand nighttime temperatures between 10°C and 13°C in five-day forecast.

Independent weather information broadly supports the wet-weather outlook. A 2026 Everest Base Camp weather guide places typical August temperatures at around 16°C/6°C in Namche Bazaar, 10°C/2°C in Dingboche and 2°C/-5°C at Everest Base Camp, while warning of frequent afternoon rain, slippery trails, cloud-covered mountains and possible flight disruptions.

August falls within Nepal’s monsoon period, when the Everest region can experience persistent cloud, rainfall and reduced visibility.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) remains Nepal’s official authority for weather monitoring and forecasting and provides dedicated tourism and mountaineering forecasts.

For trekkers currently heading toward Everest Base Camp, guides recommend allowing extra time in the itinerary, carrying waterproof clothing and protecting electronic equipment and sleeping gear from moisture. Those travelling by air should also remain prepared for possible weather-related changes to Lukla flight schedules.

Kathmandu, August 18, 2026 — The prolonged war involving Iran, the United States and Israel is emerging as a significant external challenge for Nepal’s tourism industry, despite Nepal being geographically far from the conflict zone.

The biggest impact has come through air connectivity and rising fuel prices. More than 70 percent of Nepal’s long-haul air passengers traditionally travel through Middle Eastern hubs, particularly Doha and Dubai. Disruptions and rerouting in the region have therefore affected one of Nepal’s most important gateways for European and American tourists.

The conflict also pushed aviation fuel prices sharply higher in Nepal. In April, the price of aviation turbine fuel for international flights in Kathmandu increased by 77.63 percent, while domestic aviation fuel prices rose by 97.63 percent. Higher operating costs translated into more expensive airfares and contributed to cancellations during the peak spring trekking season.

The effect was particularly visible among Western travellers. Nepal received 120,516 international visitors in March 2026, slightly below the 121,687 recorded in March 2025. US arrivals fell by 28.1 percent during the month, according to tourism data reported in Nepal.

However, the downturn has not completely reversed Nepal’s tourism recovery. Nepal recorded 92,573 international visitors in July, reportedly 15.7 percent higher than the same month a year earlier.

With tensions again escalating in August and oil prices approaching $92 a barrel, prolonged uncertainty could keep airfares high and weaken autumn bookings.

For Nepal, the crisis highlights the need to diversify air routes, strengthen regional markets and reduce dependence on Middle Eastern transit hubs.

Bagmati Tourism Office Tightens Rules on Licensed Guides for Trekking and Adventure Activities

Kathmandu: The Province Tourism Office of Bagmati Province has directed trekking and tourism businesses to ensure that tourists receive services only through legally authorized and licensed guides.

Issuing a notice on 2083/04/27, the office said it had received complaints and information regarding tourism services being provided by individuals without the required government authorization. The notice covers trekking, mountaineering, rafting, paragliding and other tourism-related activities involving both domestic and foreign tourists.

According to the directive, tourists participating in trekking, tours, rafting, mountaineering or other tourism activities must be provided services through guides holding the required license from the concerned authority. Tourism businesses have also been instructed to verify a guide’s license, its validity and the guide’s legal eligibility to operate the relevant tourism activity before assigning services.

The Tourism Office has further directed tourism entrepreneurs, travel and trekking operators, hotels and resorts, guides and other stakeholders to prioritize tourist safety, service quality and professional standards while fully complying with prevailing laws, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

Tourism businesses operating through guides must maintain proper records of the guides they employ, including details of their licenses and other required documents. The office has warned that legal action will be initiated against individuals or businesses found operating tourism services through unauthorized guides.

The provincial office has urged tourism entrepreneurs, guides and other stakeholders to strictly follow the directive to make tourism services safer, more professional, responsible and trustworthy for visitors.
