Carved into a cliff face at 4,000 metres near the Tibetan border, the Chhoser Cave also known as Shija Jhong Cave is one of the least understood sites in the entire Himalayan region.

Five storeys high. Over 40 interconnected rooms. Built entirely by hand into the rock face of Upper Mustang, believed to be around 2,500 years old. Scientists have traced three distinct periods of use - burial chambers before 1000 BC, family shelters during the battles of the 10th century, and meditation chambers and military lookouts after the 1400s.

Upper Mustang remained a restricted region until 1992, and much of what lies within its cliffs is still being uncovered.
