Moderate-altitude hiking itineraries, in Nepal, are often overlooked against the dizzying experiences of the Great Himalaya. However, the often-travelled Mid-Hill trails do offer some of the most impressive walks and cultural trips, taking us through countryside bedecked with scattered villages, terraced farmlands, picturesque valleys and lonely ridgelines, all within the grand view of the Himalayan range.

Langtang Himal(massif) may not home any popular eight-thousandner peak nor have the well-established trekking infrastructures that of the Khumbu (Everest) and Annapurna regions, but she packs a quieter Himalayan utopia wrapped in magic and mystery.

Blessed with gorgeous valleys, pristine alpine lakes, mountain villages and sheer vertical reliefs within eyeshots; Langtang region is immensely significant to the two prominent religious communities of Nepal, the Buddhists and Hindus. Sharing the sacred trails, here, with religious pilgrims; casual trekkers can not simply escape from the feeling that they themselves are on a spiritual journey on these hallowed Himalayan Shangri-La.

When we say ‘Himalaya’, pictures of impossible mountains, geological beauties, religious mythologies and cultural folklores conjures up, and, there are few regions in the Himalaya that can rival the intensity and lures of the Langtang Himal.

On our “Sneak Peak” series this week, we eye the Ganesh Himal 💛🖤🤍.

Named after the elephant headed Hindu God, Ganesh, this subrange of the Himalaya is easily seen from Kathmandu City to the northwest skies. The highest peak in the massif, Yangra (Ganesh I), towers at an elevation of 7,422 m (24,350 ft), with three other peaks over 7,000 m (23,000 ft) and fourteen others over 6,000 m (20,000 ft). Yet, the Ganesh Himal is often passed over against the more illustrious eight-thousandners of the Himalaya .... tusk, tusk! to be a seven-thousandner. As a result, the region sits quiet, less promoted, underdeveloped and away from the boisterous crowds. Untouched by modern tourism infrastructures and influences so far, trekkers, here, will find themselves walking in one of the remotest regions in the Himalaya - experiencing the many indigenous forests, traditional villages and stunning snowy sceneries; despite the fantastic surroundings, trekkers may not encounter many other travellers.

A little-known secret, Dapcha Chattrebangh, was once a bustling settlement along the medieval trading route heading east from Kathmandu. The opening of the eastern highway, however, left the old town high and dry, forgotten and almost abandoned. Yet, the ancient buildings made of bricks, woods and mud, remain intact as when the inhabitants moved out, still holding their traditional characters, charms and townscape; earning Dapcha a status of resilience for not just surviving its lost years but also the destructive earthquakes of 2015.

Furthermore, the historic township of Newar settlements stretches along a ridgeline with expansive views of the Himalaya, including Mt. Gaurishankar and the Jugal Mountain range. Visitors can enjoy a daytrip filled with pleasant walkabouts, as well as short hikes around the scattered farming communities and fields on the outskirt of the endearing Dapcha Chattrebangh.

The resplendent hillocks, and some of the best tea-producing estates, catered for scintillating nature walks during our stay in Darjeeling. Here’s a mix of short clips we were able to collect while enjoying laidback saunters and relishing little pieces of the gorgeous tea estates. Hope you like them.

Photos from our recent visit to the “Queen of the Hills’, Darjeeling. Renowned for her dark-leaf teas and tea gardens, who ornate her rolling hills, stretching all the way down to river valleys; the small hill station is a splendour with enviable lush greens and scattered pretty communities.

With help from our local friends, we were happily shown the many hiking trails, tourist features and quiet daily lives, away from the busy main town. Sure-fire, the hillock district on the laps of the ‘five peaks’ of the Kanchenjunga Himalayan range was a delight on our travel sensory. Everlastingly, those romantic sunset walks amidst the tea gardens and, pine and bamboo forest, will always be our favourite moments from the Queen of the Hills.
