Important Update on Current Situation in Nepal - Travel Advisory
Dear All,
Nepal is experiencing significant civil unrest, which has escalated into one of the most widespread and severe protests in its history. The civil unrest comes at the beginning of the autumn travel season, a peak time for tourism in the country. We are closely monitoring the fast-evolving situation to keep you informed. Therefore, let's inform you about the current situation.
The Gen Z group called for a demonstration against the government on September 8th to express their outrage over the systemic corruption and nepotism among the political elite since the beginning of democracy in Nepal in 2014. Gen Z's outrage grew after the government blocked 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X. Many members of Generation Z used these platforms to learn, earn money, and connect with the global community.
The government's response on the first day (for the 8th September demonstration) was brutal, resulting in the deaths of 19 Gen Z from live ammunition and more than 4,000 were injured. The brutality shown by the government sparked national outrage at all levels, and today (September 9th), people took to the streets, and protests intensified dramatically. Defying a curfew, enraged crowds vandalised and set fire to key symbols of political power, including the Nepali Congress party office and the parliament building, the private residences of numerous high-profile politicians, including Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba, ministers, and the Supreme Court.
The situation is quite serious for now, but in a significant development, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9th to "pave the way for a constitutional solution". Several other ministers have also resigned.
A political dialogue will start anytime, but we are unsure how it will progress. The situation could improve if the dialogue begins this afternoon or late tonight, but we'll have to wait. Therefore, all our friends travelling to Nepal soon should stay updated on the current situation.
Thank you very much. We will update you on any further developments.
