Discovering Gokyo Lake: A Hidden Gem in the Himalayas
Tucked away in Nepal's Khumbu region, the Gokyo Lakes are a stunning chain of glacial lakes that sit quietly at the foot of some of the world’s tallest mountains. Located within Sagarmatha National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—these high-altitude lakes offer a peaceful, less-traveled alternative to the more popular Everest Base Camp trek.
Perched at elevations ranging from 4,700 to 5,000 meters, the lakes are fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the Himalayas. There are six main lakes in the Gokyo system, with Dudh Pokhari being the most visited. Right beside it sits Gokyo Village, a small seasonal settlement that welcomes trekkers with cozy lodges and warm meals.
One of the highlights of the area is Gokyo Ri, a nearby peak standing at about 5,357 meters. Climbing it rewards you with some of the best panoramic views in the Himalayas—you can see Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all in one sweeping glance.
But Gokyo is more than just a scenic spot. These lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, and each year, hundreds of pilgrims make their way here during the Janai Purnima festival to bathe in the icy waters.
For trekkers looking for adventure off the beaten path, the Gokyo region delivers. The trails are quieter than the main Everest route, the landscapes are otherworldly, and the experience feels more personal. It’s also a key section of the more demanding Everest Three Passes Trek.
Whether you're chasing mountain views, spiritual connection, or just a deep breath of fresh Himalayan air, Gokyo Lake is a place that stays with you long after you've left.
