1. Get a Solid Travel Insurance
Make sure your insurance covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation. If something goes wrong up there, a heli rescue can cost thousands of dollars.
2. Take it slow Altitude is Real
Don’t rush! Acclimatization days in Namche and Dingboche are essential. Altitude sickness can hit anyone, no matter how fit you are.
Whenever possible, trek higher during the day but sleep lower at night, it really helps your body adjust.
3. Sun Protection Is a Must
Bring a wide hat, good sunglasses (cat. 4), high-SPF sunscreen, and lip balm with UV protection, the sun at high altitude is brutal.
4. Pack Smart and Light
You’ll need way less than you think. You can wash clothes along the trail, and trust me, trekking with a lighter backpack makes everything more enjoyable.
Focus on quality layers, good boots and a down jacket.
5. Hydration Is Your Best Friend
Drink plenty of water (4-5 liters daily) and add electrolytes to replace minerals you lose through sweat.
Use purification tablets or a filter bottle to save money and reduce waste.
6. Bring Cash – No ATMs After Namche
Everything gets pricier the higher you go, and you’ll need cash for meals, snacks, and charging devices.
Plan for around 2,000–4,000 NPR per day, depending on how much you spend on food, snacks, and extras like hot showers or charging.
7. Carry Toilet Paper and Wet Wipes
You won’t find any toilet paper in most teahouses. Use the wet wipes as a shower replacement, it’s often too cold or expensive to shower at high altitude.
8. Expect Basic Food, It’s Part of the Experience
Menus repeat often (I had dal bhat 14 days in a row), but the food fuels you well. Dal Bhat and Lemon Ginger Honey Tea are absolute game changers, they keep you warm and energized
9. Be Ready for Unpredictable Weather
Sunshine, snow, wind, all in one day! Layer up, keep rain gear at hand, and protect electronics and important documents in waterproof bags.
10. And enjoy all moments!
