The Red Panda

Spotted high up in the cool temperate forests of Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and China, these solitary bamboo-eaters embody the gentle spirit of the Eastern Himalayas. They are shy, elusive, and utterly unique, preferring elevations of 2,200-4,800m.

With their rusty coat and bushy, ringed tail, they spend their days napping in the trees and foraging for bamboo.

- they aren’t closely related to Giant Pandas at all and are the sole species in their own taxonomic family!

Gokyo-Renjo trek, Fall 2025. 🏔️🥾

Highlights of the trek include spectacular views from Sagarmatha National Park to the breathtaking Gokyo Lakes and Renjo-La Pass, which was once a trade route to Tibet that countless Sherpas used to cross to reach Tibet. From here you get to see Mt Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam and other snow-capped peaks in Khumbu.

At Sherpa Society we specialize in building custom itineraries across the Himalayas. Shoot us a DM if you’re interested! 📩

The Himalayan Monal 🕊️

Meet the Danphe, Nepal’s national bird. Also called Ilpeyan monal, it is a symbol of beauty, grace, and the wild spirit of the Himalayas.

Found between 2,400-4,500 meters, this radiant pheasant shines with iridescent blues, greens, and fiery oranges, glimmering in forests and shrublands.

Often foraging gracefully on alpine slopes, the Danphe is shy and rare. Locals see it as a sign of good fortune and a reminder of the Himalayas’ untouched majesty.

Maya Devi Temple - Lumbini: The Birthplace of the Buddha

Down in the Terai plains of Nepal lies Lumbini, where Siddhartha Gautama was born more than 2,600 years ago, later becoming the Buddha.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lumbini is centered around the Maya Devi Temple, marking the exact spot of his birth. Around it, you’ll find peaceful monastic zones built by countries from across the world, and the ancient Ashoka Pillar, left behind in the 3rd century BCE.

For many practicing Buddhists, Lumbini is a place to slow down, reflect, and connect with history and spirituality in its purest form.

The Snow Leopard 🐾

Known as the “ghost of the mountains,” these elusive big cats roam Tibet, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Mongolia, all the way to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and even Siberia.

Only 4,000-6,500 remain in the wild, making them a vulnerable species. They prey on blue sheep, ibex, and marmots, thereby keeping fragile alpine ecosystems in balance.

As top predators, snow leopards are indicators of mountain health. Protecting them means safeguarding water, biodiversity, and the high-altitude environments that millions of people depend on.

But threats remain: climate change, shrinking habitat, poaching, and human conflict all mean their future depends on conservation.

We’ll be posting more about majestic animals found in the Himalayas across the future. Let us know what you think!

Continuing with the epic snapshots shared by our adventurous friend Jurgen from the legendary Three Passes Trek. ⛰️⛰️🏔️

Widely regarded as one of the most iconic and demanding treks in the world, the Three Passes route is a true challenge in the heart of the Himalayas.

From the dramatic heights of Kongma La (5,550m) and Cho La (5,420m) to the icy ascent of Renjo La (5,360m), this journey pushes your limits.

Trekkers can even make a side trip to Everest Base Camp (5364m) and Kala Patthar (5545m) — since the route naturally brings them close to Gorakshep, the last stop before EBC.
