Effective April 1, 2023, new requirements for the use of trekking guides and porters in Nepal will be enforced. The government has made it mandatory for foreign tourists to hire a guide for trekking to ensure organized and safe trekking. The Nepal government will enforce this rule from the end of March 2023. The TIMS card, which was issued for Free Individual Trekkers (FIT), has been discontinued, and they cannot travel alone with that card. The process has to be completed through Group Individual Trekkers (GIT).
The decision of the government to close FIT, which has brought entrepreneurs into action, is expected to provide relief to the entire tourism sector. The closure of FIT teams has been enforced for the safety, exploration, and rescue of tourists.
The new rule aims to ensure the safety and security of trekkers and promote sustainable tourism in the country, providing more employment opportunities for local guides and porters. However, the impact of the new rule on the number of trekkers visiting Nepal remains to be seen, and it is important for trekkers to follow all regulations and guidelines for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
