Literally meaning of Kanchanjunga is "mountain of jewels". It is said that the famous sage Guru Padma Sambhava buried the treasures of knowledge in this most beautiful of mountains. It is so revered by the locals that the Lamas from Sikkim do an annual tribute dance to this sacred peak. This region takes you to the snowline through thick forests of rhododendron trees in the lower region and yak gr

azing in high pastures. The wild flowers are in full bloom during the months of April and May, and clear views of the mountains are also more likely during this period. Much more than trek, it is a journey of discovery. The Kanchanjunga Range is possibly the last unexplored region of Eastern Nepal. Breathtaking views of the vast Himalayan range can be seen from the majority of the route's trails. This is a sparsely populated area with mainly Limbu and Rai communities. The people are not accustomed to receiving tourists at their doorsteps and show great hospitality. For an all-round trekking experience a visit to either, or both, base camps of Kanchenjunga, at 8586 meters, the third highest mountain on earth, is always possible but our experience recommends making the both base camps in a single trip. Once you arrive in the higher parts of Kanchenjunga, you will find great masses of Himalayan peaks surrounded by a number of peaks lesser in height but no less attractive. The trek is at times arduous but it passes through some wonderful remote villages and is never boring.. Kanchenjunga Trek

NEPAL AIRLINES- NAC has planned to resume services to Suketar Airport in Taplejung (hub of Kanchenjunga Region) from November 29, 2017 with a single flight every Wednesday. The flight from Kathmandu to Suketar will depart at 7 am. The airfare has been fixed at Rs.5,405 one way for Nepalese (different airfare for Foreign Tourists).

NAC suspended flights to Suketar Airport last year as the dirt runway was being upgraded. The airport, which now has a blacktopped runway, is the gateway to Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

One of the major attractions in Taplejung is the Pathibhara Devi Temple, which attracts a significant number of foreign and domestic tourists.

MT. KANCHENJUNGA DIAMOND JUBILEE
18ᵗʰ TO 24ᵗʰ NOVEMBER

Mt. Kanchenjunga Diamond Jubilee 2016 is going to be held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Kanchenjunga by Joe Brown and George Christopher Band on May 25, 1955, under the leadership of Sir Charles Evans. Mr. Joe Brown is only the person who is still living among the group.

The height of this mountain is 8,586 meters and it is the third highest mountain of the world after Mount Everest of Nepal and K2 Godwin of Pakistan; it is second highest mountain of Nepal. It is located in Taplejung district of Nepal which lies in the north-east part of Nepal. It is one of the two districts which has border with both the neighboring countries India and China and the mountain also borders all the three countries – Taplejung of Nepal, Sikkim of India and Tibet of China.

Mr. Ang Furba Sherpa was the first Nepali national to reach the summit of Mt.Kanchenjunga on May 14, 1980 with the Japanese Expedition Team led by Masatsugu. As per the data of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ministry there are 344 persons who have successfully climbed this mountain. This mountain’s meaning is ‘Five Treasures of Snow’ as it has five peaks and four of the peaks are above 8,000 meters. Likewise there are 16 peaks which are above 7,000 meters.

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area was established on 1997 by collaboration of World Wildlife Fund & National Reserve and Wildlife Conservation Department. Red panda, snow leopard are the main endangered species found in this area and two critically endangered species of amphibians – Blanford’s spiny frog (Paa Blanfordii) and Dubois paha frog (Paa Rostandi) are found in this area.

The General Assembly of Union of Asian Alpine Association (UAAA) is scheduled for Nov. 18 & 19 in Kathmandu. All the members of UAAA have been invited to attend the meeting. International Conference on mountain tourism, climate change and earthquake in Nepal will be also organized in Kathmandu on the same dates. These guests will also travel to Suketar, Taplejung for the Kanchenjunga Diamond Jubilee 2016 which will help to bolster the image of the event itself.

The Jubilee program is expected to help to promote the tourism industry in Taplejung district and also support the local products and foods in the district. We also expect to announce the official recognition of three more mountains in this region above 8,000 meters.

Tips for High Altitude Acclimatization:
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

1. Eat your biggest meal at lunch.
If possible this is great. You have the highest digestive power when the sun is the highest. You can absorb the most nutrients. This is easy to do in Nepal with all the lovely tea houses along the way. This also helps slow your ascent giving your body time to catch up.

2. Eat dinner before dark.
Schedule dinner for you or your group around 5pm. The earlier you eat the easier to digest. It is so much better than eating a big meal late and then going to sleep. At altitude digestion is already compromised due to the lack of oxygen available. We are not made to eat after dark. In our evolution it was dangerous as animals would come get you. Eating early and having time to digest will help you sleep and acclimatize better. Digestion takes about 60-70% of the bodies energy. We should be doing other deep healing functions instead of trying to digest. You can reach deeper sleep if the body is not trying to digest. Trying to digest a big meal at altitude will decrease your respiratory rate at night leaving you feeling crummy in the morning. Soups are great at night.

3. Drink lots of water.
I am sure you know this. Take a p*e bottle so you can easily p*e on the night and then drink more water right after. Listen to your bodily urges of needing to p*e or being thirsty and don't ignore them.

4. Drink warm water especially if it is cold out.
Cold water is constricting and shocking on the system. It is harder to drink enough. Drink water in between meals. Lots of water and food don't go well together. Too much water with a meal dilutes our digestive juices. Drink 30 min before a meal to hydrate the stomach lining. Then sip during the meal. Drink more a half hour after the meal.

5. Avoid constipation.
First thing when you wake up drink a liter of warm water to eliminate. If you don't get good elimination you will likely be gassy all day. Common at altitude. Take smooth move tea or other gentle laxatives in case you have troubles. Having a back up off p**p makes us toxic, lethargic, and uncomfortable. Having a clear colon is so helpful for acclimatizing.

Clear blue skies over Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (5,143m) captured by Pasang Sherpa over at . (Thanks for sharing!)

The trek to North Base Camp is part of a circuit trek (get itinerary and details here: goo.gl/2T6KWK) passing by Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters. In Tibetan, the name Kanchenjunga means ‘five great treasures of snow’ which gives an idea of the spectacular mountain views that await the trekker who ventures to this eastern corner of the Nepali Himalayas.
