Shaman masks

Nepal Shaman Fungus Mask
These extraordinary masks were formed from large, single Lingzhi fungus (Ganoderma Lucidum). The natural structure of the fungus has been coaxed into forming a nose, ears, a mouth and eyes. Two holes on either side allow for a natural twine to have been threaded through so that the mask can be either worn or hung for (perhaps) ritual display. The surface is hard, glossy and dramatically wrinkled. It is believed that such masks were worn ritually to frighten off malevolent spirits while others hung on walls for “house protection”. The Rai people of Himalayas, (middle hills) North East Nepal are known to fashion house-protecting masks from tree fungus.

The Nepal Shaman Fungus Masks shown in the photo dates from the 19th century or much earlier. Many of the Nepali masks have very thick patina from age and handling over long periods of time. Some masks have very old repairs indicating that masks were not discarded when damaged but repaired over hundreds of years of use.
