The area has vegetation graduating from pine, hemlock, fir, juniper, birch, rhododendrons and shrubs to alpine plants and then to bare rock and snow. The area is home to the Himalayan tahr, ghoral, serow and musk deer. Common birds are the impeyan, pheasant, blood pheasant, red-billed cough and the yellow-billed cough. Elevation ranges from 2845 – 8848 m. Trekking in this region starts either form Jiri or from Lukla (50 mins airtrip from Kathmandu).

New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa made the first successful ascent of Everest on May 29, 1953.
